In the UK it's the Rock Salt they put on the roads in winter that tends to accelerate the corrosion, you'd probably need to be beach driving here to get it quite that bad.
A few years ago, you could get lots of 200 & 300Tdi motors in the UK that were pulled from rusty Discos after an MOT failure.

Mind you, the rusting there has probably driven the production of replacement panels......
