Series 2A gearbox suffix c

Hi Folks,
I have a Series 2A gearbox suffix c which I am putting back together. The second gear on the layshaft is held in place with two halves of a ring see diagrams for part number 239272. They call it a split ring because it is split into two halves. I have just received a new ring from one of our main dealers and it has arrived as a solid ring. Looking at various sites and discussing this with the supplier who advised me that this was the way they come these days. It wont slide onto the shaft complete. Am I supposed to carefully cut it through the marks on the ring and if so what is the best way to do this? Could someone please advise me on this part and how to fit it?

Seems that it's manufactured as a ring but you need to snap it in half to install.

The cutouts create a weak point.

And it will be hard and brittle enough to break rather than to bend.

A drop of locktite or sealant to hold them in place will help.
Does not take much movement on assembly for one to drop out, as a mate discovered when half the ring came out during an oil change.
I helped him pull out the gearbox and sort it.
