Hi
I have recently bought a cheap l320 and there is an oil leak.
I suspect it is a rear seal, but, as I am not familiar with these cars at all, I wanted some opinions on what else it might be before i get it on the hoist over the weekend.
The car is the basic 2007 RRS L320 with 2.7 diesel engine.
I removed all covers from the underside and de greased as you couldn't see the oil from...well... the oil.
After getting it clean and idling for 30 mins there is fresh oil at the joint of the bell housing/rear of engine (dark black, smells like engine oil).
It is very hard to see up there , but i don't see oil above this point that is dripping down.
I would appreciate experienced guys letting me know the usual suspects for this motor.
I did notice the filter/housing is up above that way, does it tend to leak here ( or is that just wishful thinking).
Help is much appreciated

The oil cooler is prone to leaking and the oil runs over the back of the engine.

you will likely have my problem, Leaking valley thermostat housing and oil/fuel cooler seals (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l320-range-rover-sport/301692-leaking-valley-thermostat-housing-oil-fuel-cooler-seals.html) its a oil & fuel cooler, and there is a seal between the mounting plate and the block and 3 between the cooler and the mounting plate

if you climb up on top of the engine with the cover off and shine a torch down towards the block/valley near the oil filter housing there are a few clear gaps to look, and you will possibly see oil pooled there. i also had a thermostat housing and house leak, so i would hear the coolant sizzling in the oil when the engine was hot

Thanks for the replies guys, I will take a good look over the top and see what i can see from up there in the morning.

I take it the oil cooler is under where the filter sits?

Thanks for all the help guys. As suggested, It appears to have simply been the oil filter cover o-ring. Once i changed the oil and replaced the filter/o-ring... and left a ton of black degreaser filled dirt on my driveway.... There has been no new oil coming down the back, hopefully it will pass inspection tomorrow (crosses fingers).
I really appreciate the tips on where to look.
