We are two weeks into an eight week trip and the rear door on the Defender is jammed between open and closed as and I can’t figure out what has happened. From the outside I can see the catch is not latched, the door doesn’t seem to have dropped but I can’t open it and can’t close it. We have a rest day at Uluru tomorrow and the following day and I propose to remove everything via the side doors and see what the issue is.
Any ideas? Very inconvenient

No idea really, yes very inconvenient.
Does the car have central locking?
I've seen the back door stuck between locked and unlocked with central locking, I can usually open it by getting in the boot and moving the lock lever to "unlock".

The only thing I can think of is trying to unlock it as I said above, they key may not do it but the lever inside might.

It’s not actually locked, and you can see through the gap between the seal and the door frame that the lock is not latched but the door won’t move and doesn’t seem to have dropped.

As you say you can see through the gap it is nothing to do with the catch.
Get down on the ground and look up under the perimeter edge. My bet is something has got swept under the bottom edge. It may be visible, may not.
The interior floor is quite flat and a stray tent peg/ small spanner/ tyre tube cap/ pebble may be caught there.
Remedy - either take the door hinge pins off, or easier: take door off hinges/ hinge and door off body.
OR just give the door a good pull, outwards and upwards at the same time.
