Synchro gear acceptable wear

I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of my early series 1 gearbox after striping it down and not finding too many issues.

I have put in an order for bearings and seals. Only really the mainshaft pinion bearing was shot. The others are ok but replacing most to be sure.

One question I have is about the acceptable wear of the synchro gear.

As you can see from the photo, the ends of the gear on the 3rd gear side have some wear that has created a sharp edge on the ends of the teeth. There is still a good 10-11mm of meshing length between the synchro gear and 3rd gear, but I assume this wear could cause gear changing difficulties (shifting into 3rd).

I do not want to drop $500 on a new synchro unit, I have to limit the budget somewhere and I think I could live with this.

My questions is; should I de-burr the edges of the teel in this area to re-establish the profile on the ends of the gear given that, once shifted into 3rd, there is no wear and the teeth will mesh fine?

Considering a lot of aftermarket parts are made in India I wonder if this is direct from the manufacturer ?

Check out the sellers other parts. Some of the prices are way above what you'd normally pay so it's odd that the synchro is reasonably priced.

Just a couple of things to look out for. Make sure all the small grooves in the cones are still present. A smooth area could mean that the unit was used with a broken detent spring .
If the springs have worn grooves, replace them.(There have been reports of new springs being the wrong size and shape)
If the flat area in the selector has got steps, it will be difficult to slide in a new spring and it won't be quite as effective as a new one should be.

That one in your picture has considerably more tooth wear than mine.

My cones appear ok with all the grooves present and consistent.

I think I will try re-profiling the ends of the teeth slightly. That way at least I know I have the original quality part still installed.

I thought I had seen just the internal gear (without the cones) available, but I've since been unable to find one.

You're correct, the one in the picture is U/S. I tried to take a picture of the worn step on the flat under the spring.

The problem is that exactly the same part will probably be supplied by LR suppliers at twice the price (in different packaging) because there are several people in the supply chain that need to make a profit.
A large percentage of aftermarket parts for Land Rovers are from India but suppliers use terms like OEM supplier, OEM quality, made to OEM specification etc. Of course this can't be proved and the original supplier of the part may well be out of business or has long since stopped supplying parts to Land Rover. OEM basically means it should fit and maybe the material quality is similar to that of the original part.
When I order parts from the UK it's interesting to see the Country of origin which they have to declare.

I did read that there was an Italian company making the synchro units some years ago but I'd guess the price was much, much higher.
