Hi I'm looking to buy a Gap tool, and am weighing up a G4 vs. a G3. I am wondering whether anyone has found any practical difference between them, I have a LR3 but might possible get an LR4 in the future. Any advice is appreciated.

If you look on the GAP website you will see a table outlining compatibility differences between the various LR models for the 3 & 4 generations of the GAP tools.

Hi, many thanks for taking the time to reply. Yep I've had a look and they look pretty similar for my purposes, I was more interested if anybody had found any practical use differences or oddities.
Cheers

The G4 can't access some or possibly all the ecus on vehicles prior to around MY17 or MY18 unless either the special OBD adapter is used or IIRC 2 wires are cut/removed from the OBD port of earlier vehicles. This is because those wires are used for a new OBD protocol used by some modules in the later vehicles.
Wires were cut in a D4's OBD port to allow my G4 (purchased for my MY21.5 L405) as the required function wasn't available on the G2 tool and I wasn't going to buy a G3 tool which had the option just to do this particular calibration nor to buy the adapter.

I had the G3 for my Discovery 4 and then got the L663 Defender. While I could read and clear some faults on the L663 with the G3 it could not access any of the canbus diagnostics or do a CCF change if I ever need that. I upgraded to the G4 from Gap for a modest fee. With a G4 I don't think you'll get any added functionality for your D3, will need the OBD adapter or mod as mentioned above on a D4 and will be ready for your L663 in the future!
