Hi All, IÂ’m a new member and I have a 300tdi 90 Defender that needs a chassis replacement. Has anyone had experience with this in Vic? Who should I get to do the replacement? I was going to see if Richards Chassis in the UK can send a chassis out. Are there any good places to get a galv chassis in Aus? Thank you in advance for all your help.

I can't help with recommending someone to do the job but....
I just spoke with an Engineer and it is possible to change the chassis 'legally' but there are a few hoops to jump through and an Engineer to pay.
I'm sure I read that one of the UK chassis suppliers will stamp your existing chassis number on the new chassis but not sure if that's acceptable in VIC. If you were to do this you would have to ensure that the chassis number on your old chassis was cut out & disposed of.
How bad is your chassis ?
Is replacing sections is an option rather than replacement ?

Lookup KLR - I am pretty sure that they are an agent for Maer chassis and surely could help…

I would also contact KLR for a Maer chassis.

Hi Landyfarm,
Welcome to AULRO.
There is a member here in Victoria who has done it.
As others have said get in touch with KLR they sell chassis, they must have some idea, but they are in NSW and it'll be a different process in every state.
Here is a thread on it, doesn't sound like he'd do it again.

Yeah that was me, changing the chassis was not any bigger deal than anticipated (i.e. a BIG task) but importing one was a nightmare and the costs blew out like a government project. If you can deal with someone who imports them by the container load, so much the better. And no, the pommy manufacturers will not stamp your number in.

I was at KLR last week and saw that they had new galvanised chassis in stock.

Hi Landyfarm,

Technically it should be the same for all States. VSB14 is a national standard. Under the Constitution, registration and compliance of road vehicles to operate on a road is a State responsibility however Federal has jurisdiction over compliance of vehicles from a manufacturing and importation standpoint. All States have opted in to VSB14 and you will see some States have their own amendments to some sections of VSB14. You will find the amendments add to the document, not reduce its scope (Federal Law trumps State Law in pecking order to the extent there is inconsistency). If the relevant section is amended, it will likely be in a separate document to VSB14 because it is amended by legislation. The VIC government should publish a doc that consolidates the VSB14 and local amendments. This is what the engineer will be working from.
To the OP, look up VSB14 for the base standards to know what you are in for. As someone going through an engine conversion, the best money you will spend is engaging an engineer before you do anything. They will give you the road map to success, can save you money and time, builds trust in the engineer that you are doing it properly. No engineer likes you to rock up after the job is done and ask him/her to sign off.
Class in constitutional law is dismissed. Back to more important matters.

Read post#14 in the thread below.
Chassis numbers, on the chassis. | Land Rover UK Forums (https://www.lrukforums.com/threads/chassis-numbers-on-the-chassis.266570/)
Possibly only applies to the UK but it seems they will stamp the chassis number under some circumstances.
