Ticking noise in engine TD4 Defender 110 - help around Darwin?

Hi guys, we brought our TD4 Defender 110, 2007, from Netherlands to Australia for a 4 months trip. We drove around 3000km now and are a bit north of Alice Springs, on our way to Darwin. The car started to make a knocking/ticking sound from the engine. Went to Adelaide to a shop that read out the computer. There was a imbalance in 3 of the 4 cylinders in the errors. While on the road I’ve met Michael, somewhere in the outback, and he has been really helpfull on whatsapp, trying to help me out. He also gave advise to check this forum for help, to see if there is someone nearby Darwin who is willing to help me out. Michael also offered to send me his spare injectors, but I need an address to ship it to. Preferably where someone also can help me replace them. I will also order an Forscan device to relearn the injectors, and most likely also the seals, copper washers and stretch bolts.

On the road with a one and three year old, so really hoping not to strand somewhere remote…

If anyone could help it is really appreciated!!

The Defender TDCi (puma, 2007 - 2016)

*2.4 in general only need the injector seals doing, they dont tend to eat injectors.
*2.2 eat injectors

*BUT depending on how many km's it had done I would plan to replace the injectors. (dont bother getting them tested, its a waste of time and your money)
*my experience with Defenders from euro land is they tend to be overloaded and the injectors / engines have a way shorter life than here in Australia.
*The nasty DPF doesnt do the engine any favours.

Thanks guys, went to Leigh at LR Darwin. He ordered some new seals and washers and i could work on the car in front of the building. Changed the parts, no difference. Sound is coming from the 3th cylinder. Put a new injector in that one just to be sure, didn’t help. Seems like the conrod/big end is on it’s way out. We’ll swap the engine for a different one next week. Leigh is a great help!

It's sounding like it is cheaper to do an engine transplant than refurbish bearings in existing engine?

No doubt there could be a number of reasons for your engines issue.

Does the knock go away soon after engine is warm or is it there all the time? Wonder if your 3rd cylinder is giving you a hint that the following recall is relevant and soon to be a bigger issue; is your VIN captured in this recall and if so was the recall a new engine or a modification to the existing engine? The same article also talks of faulty injector hitting piston...cam carriers cracking.

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

It was the quickest option, and replacing the bigends is also an expensive repair, so decided to go for a engine swap. The knock does not go away.
