Hi all

I was doing some parts shopping for my 1958 109" project just now and was looking to buy some new front brake shoes, however using the catalogue part numbers (512415 & 512416) only turned one option (NOS riveted shoes). Is there an equivalent part number I should be using? Or does someone know somewhere that might have them in stock.

While I'm posting, I've also had trouble locating a right rear brake cylinder (521544/GI 64673537) - the only place that seems to have them listed and available is selling them for ~$250 plus ~$43 postage from Belgium. A local lead on one of these - hopefully a bit cheaper - would also be helpful. I found a left hand side one for $114 however they are out of stock for the right.

Thanks in advance.
Wayne

Thanks - however I don't see front Series 1 109 shoes, or can I use Series 2 shoes?

I believe that the cylinder in the left picture is for the rear of a Series 1 with 11" brakes. Metal dust covers, no rubber boots.
The cylinder on the right appears to be for a later model. Notice the lip for the rubber boot.
For part numbers consult your Series 1 54-58 parts catalogue. Generally speaking S1 part numbers are between 0 and 315000.

If you find a decent brake company they could get the old shoes re-lined. If you're really lucky they might have exchange shoes in stock.

521544 is available from the UK.

As I understand it, during Series production, the model year production started at the end of the summer (UK) holidays, i.e August, and was named for the upcoming year, so Series 1 & 2 were both produced during calendar 1958. In fact, the new Series 2 vehicles, I believe, started deliveries in March, but some models, including the 109 station wagon, did not start until near the end of the year. And swb petrol models had the Series 1 engine until the 1959 model.

In other words the changeover was messy. And probably later in Australia, and varying between states! (I first used Landrovers in the summer of 1958-1959 with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, and the only ones we knew of were Series 1.)

Hi Wal

That part number (521544) is from my 54-58 parts catalogue (page 127) - supposedly the second revision, October 1961. Do you have a different part number for the rear brake cylinders in your catalogue?

Thanks
Wayne

Thanks Colin - I had missed that one at Craddocks.

I will look for a a local brake company in Brisbane and see if they can sort me out.

Thanks

I'd still give British Auto Parts a try. I've found them good to deal with. Land Rover Parts - MAJOR BRAKE OVERHAUL KITS - SERIES 1,2 & 3 (https://www.britishautoparts.com.au/major_brake_overhaul_kits___series_1_2___3)

Thanks Wal - it appears the wheel cylinder LR Part no. changed between the 1956 version and the 1961 revision that I have - The GI numbers are also different.

I also note that the LR part no for the brake shoes changed although the GI number stayed the same.

Thanks
Wayne
