I gather from reading old threads here that an RDX relay is the preferred option?
can anyone tell me the part number / where to buy?
Ta.

No part number but in eBay
RDX 12V 4 Pin Flasher Relay (https://g.co/kgs/CRBkpZi)
I have Wipac units in all my Deve sets and never had an issue with those!

Did you fit all LEDs to the indicators on the car?
As I recall, you only need an adjustable type if you fitted changed all the globes to LEDs
I did this on my D1, and the relay has an adjustment knob to allow you to tweak the system to work with the trailer indicator warning light.
Sorry have no idea how it works on the defender tho.
That is, with a std relay on a D1, the trailer indicator lamp flashes, even tho you don't have a trailer connected. I adjusted the button so that it just doesn't flash. Connected the trailer and checked again making sure that the trailer warning lamp also flashes too.
I used a WIPAC WFL7LED in my D1. I got mine via ebay. Just checked, damned expensive now! But plenty available.
On the D1, the relay doesn't fit into the recess for the realy, so I just made fly leads to connect the realy and the relay is secured with a cable tie.
All works fine.
I think it's supposed to fit properly in a Defender tho ... don't know.
Hope that helps.

I fitted LEDs to my OKA, which is really just a Defender disguised as a besser brick, an I got something similar from soopa cheep. Works fine. But that was fitting then at both ends.

I replaced the indicators, side & brakes lights and the flasher relay with the one provided in the kits but not the little indicator repeaters on the front guards. This is on 1996, 1999 and 2012 Defenders. The only issues i encountered was the polarity on the td5 (1999) required the wiring to the lamps to be reversed but other than that no problems. I think one of the flashers relays (maybe all) were adjustable but i didn't need to change this, just plug and play. Maybe this was due to the repeaters still being in the circuit. I have plugged in trailers and experienced no issues either. I changed them all around 8 years or so ago and had no problems.

Yeah, could be that there was some resistance in the circuit.
I can't remember with the D1, as I changed all bulbs at the same time. but for sure I had to tweak the little relay knob a few times to get the system to not show the trailer light when not fitted, and show it when fitted.
I'm not sure of the kit you mention, I did see on Brittanica Restoration he installed some leds and had similar issue with polarity on a defender too.
On the D1, they're all just bulbs, so polarity is a simple matter of pulling the bulb and fitting it reversed.
On my D1 I fitted an aftermarket cruise control. As with other cruise controls I've had, they sense resistance/continuity in the brake light circuit. If either the brake light switch or all brake bulbs blow out, cruise will not engage.
When I fitted all LED to the car, of course I forgot this little fact, so immediately cruise didn't work did it!
Checked fuses and ran around like an idiot testing cruise power etc, then it struck me the LEDs!!! ... switched the high mount brake light to std bulb and cruise works again.
It was actually the brake/tail light bulbs blowing regularly that got me to switch all bulbs to LED in the first place. On the D1, the bulbs are accessed from inside and an easy to get too panel. Hand fitted wing nuts to remove the tail light OR remove the bulb holder only. Should be easy, and maybe it is for small hands, but my fat mitts can't fit in there and turn the items needed to remove/refit.
