I received a power steering pump as a replacement for a leaky one. the trouble is it doesn't fit, the mating tongues at the back seem to be too large, which means I can't get it to mate with the waterpump
Has anyone come across this before, As a matter of interest is there only one or multiple part numbers that fit ?
Does anyone rebuild these ?

It's not just the dog gears being out of mesh is it?

The only one official LR p/n is QVB101240 and various manufacturer codes which should have the original specs but there can be all kind of oddities these days unless it's some reputable brand

as per title. I measured it out with some callipers and the new one has a bigger tongues..
oh well I guess I go new original

the truck came with a spare ---- from a disco 4.2 (sígh)
one off ebay in Sydney (this one the subject of the mail) its going back
a new one soon to be ordered and maybe a rebuild kit for the original

My wife suggested I buy this truck as a project car to work on in retirement, now its turning into a full time job, little did we know lol....

I thought the dogs were a very loose fit.
Never the less, I suspect you wont be able to buy an original LR part, I don't think I was able to at the very least - but would still like to. There are some issues where even the OEM PS pumps are not providing the same level of power assistance as a factory fitted pump.

I would read widely in the LR forums to make sure that you end up buying the right PS pump that will maintain the steering lightness that you're probably used to.

Just make sure it's not the hose that leaked, they would wear through quite easily. years ago there was an American site that sold rebuilt ones.

we suspect the o ring... it was as hard as a rock.
ill push off the dog gear and push on the one off the old pump. I can source something after market at around 400 but trying to avoid that as there are a lot of things to spend money on..

Well we got it in, was just really fiddly standing on a milk crate, bending over a lifted truck.
Here's a tip if you are struggling. Get 2 long bolts with the correct thread, chop off the driven end (please ensure it's not one of the mounting bolts, lets not discuss that[bawl] ) , round that end off a little. then screw them in the lower holes where it mounts to the water pump. slide the pump up on those mounting guides Using the mounting holes. Align the dog teeth then secure it with the 2 top bolts, remove the guide pins, insert the correct bolts, torque it up and away you go.

so we finally fired the old girl up and decided to bleed the system with no success. we looked at several guides, tried the land rover workshop manual way and can't seem to get any power assistance at all.
anyone have any ideas. or anything better than the very vague workshop manual.

For some reason putting a kit through a failed PS pump rarely seems successful. I ended up replacing mine.

If I'm following your issue correctly... when I recently replaced the PAS pump on my 2004 D2a, I took the O ring to Bursons (which by now looked like a flat washer), and we simply did our best to match it to a stock o-ring in those boxes they have - and everything was fine.

As for bleeding the system, have you fixed a clear plastic piece of hose to the bleed screw on top of the steering box, with the other end in the PAS fluid bottle? I did this, and then followed the workshop manual until the bubbles stopped. I found it tricky to get the bleed screw open enough but not too much...

When I did my D1 many years ago, I used an O ring 7mm x 2mm and it did not leak.

I reckon that D2 would probably be the same.
