I just read a thread about the Tomb Raider Defender from the original movie.
Is it a Defender?
Fine the front is a defender unit, but the doors are series ones, It wears series badges on the roof and dash, has a disco 2 auto gear selector, and to me looks like a 130 crew cab tub for the back.

Is it a hybrid from a defender or a series?
does anyone know

It's mostly defender 110. It started off life as a Defender 110 HICAP and was modified from there. One of the past newsletters had an article that I wrote about it in it, but I think that the downloads page is offline at the moment. I'll see if I can find it to post

And badges. The wheels look like sunrasors, are they?

Wheels look like regular sunnies to me.

Series style metal badges on the passenger side of the dashboard and in between the roof mounted spotties.

Is the rear tub the unit off a 130 crew cab though? It look very similar

I think the Series style doors are still used on soft top Defenders so they are a Defender item.

Phoenix

No, not a 130 tub, the 130 tub is smaller. The tub you often see on the 130 is called a HICAP or High capacity. In the UK the 110 ute comes as a dualcab hicap, a regular hicap, and a the normal tub from memory. Have a look at the UK website, it shows them all there. see the pic below.

Wouldn't the tubs would be the same dimensions and the extra 20 or so inches would be in the rear doors and body not the tub?

Does anyone know the length, width and height of the tub on a 130 and also the dimensions from the wheel arch to the back of the tub?

5th September 2006, 08:51 PM
Pheonix is right in the Uk the 90 110 and the 130 come in many many differant forms.
The tomb raider truck is just a 110 with the HC back ute As opposed to the normal ute back.
Then it just been sent to the boys with toys room (sorry special vehicles dept). Where they have played with it

But could it be built using a 130 HCPU tub on a 109 chassis?

Nah its a 110 chassis

Yeah but would a 130 tub fit onto a 109 chassis, would the wheel arches be in the right place?
I realise there would have to be body mods to the original body of the car but with the body removed would it fit properly?

here you go 110 HC . The defender 110 badge on the bonnet gives it away:D . It has series doors but they fit straight on a 110 and 90 anyway

This is the go, I have come to the realisation that my SIII ain't going to get rego'd therefore a rebuild is the go. Something similar to this could be the go, but I need to know if a 130tub would fit to a 109 or 100 inch chassis length and width wise.

A 130 tub basically cause it is possible to pick them up in this country.

they did a seris high capity anyway. The differance between a 110 and 109 is taken up in the front drivers area and not the back. Like the 90 is 4 and 3/4 inches longer than the 88. But the rear tubes are the same inside dimentions
Are you looking at a HC 130 full back or Crew Cab back HC

Crew cab I need the exterior dimensions

I think it could be done with a rangie chassis, fender tub, V8 of some description or even a Hemi six, bar work and a very understanding bank manager.

So are you going to put a crew cab 130back on a 2 door 109 Ute, or a 4 door Ute like this 110

The 110 and 109 have both the front and rear axles in a different position relative to the bodywork, although as you correctly point out the body dimensions are identical, unlike the 88 and 90. A quick check with a tape measure shows that the rear axle on the 110 is about 3.5" further back than on the 109. So swapping tubs raises problems with the wheel cutouts, although otherwise it is a straight swap.

ok ok but should the 110 be 1" further back than the 109 as the 110 is a 110Inch wheel base and the 109 is 109" wheel base. Unlike the 90. The name is the wheel base

The idea is to keep the SIII hardtop front and drivers tub, scrap all bodywork back from here. Replace it with a 130 crew cab tub. There should be a section left over in the middle hopefully enough for a row of rear seats so the car could accomodate 5 persons.

No roof, just a cage, and a custom canvas. It was registered as a ute with canopy so it should be legal, with engineers approval of course.

dobbo
6th September 2006, 08:02 PM
The easy way would be just to unbolt the roof and install a tailgate but who needs easy I want perfect.
