Some people have just slightly opened up a towball spanner. My experiences are that these are rubbish for it. It works significantly better actually buying a proper spanner. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it has something to so with the weight of the spanner. Mine is a 36mm also.

I’m going to make one. I once borrowed one from Mario, which had a matching one for holding the pulley, but I can’t do that anymore ☹️. But if I make it long enough and strong enough I can clout it with a fbh. 36 it is.

I found the best spanner type is the commonly found dog leg type.

I had two for a time, one that I bought for the TDi which comes with two open ends, 32(ish) for the Tdi and 36 for the V8 end too. It has the bends that give it a slight offset from hand to fan hub which helps, but it usually fouled a teeny bit on the TD5 and V8 with the 36 end. Never had a problem with the Tdi's 32mm need tho.

When I got Td5 from the brother, he left me the spanner and hub locking tool .. so in the end I had two I could use.

Nephew then bought his Td5, so I gave him my Td5(i.e his dads!) so he could do his stuff on it.

Now I miss it. Had to do a bit of work to both TD5s a while back and fan off with the less usable combo spanner annoyed the 'jeezuz' out of me.

I don't reckon you need a hub locking tool. A good long strong screw driver does the job fine. But once you go it off, just don't heave it gorilla tight back on. wind it up by hand and leave it. It does self tighten as it spins.

Which is, of course, the point of the LH thread. Mine shouldn't be "super" tight as I've had it off before....... famous last words...

Td5 has a right hand thread, unlike the Tdi300, which is left hand I believe.
I made my spanner out of a piece of 65 x 6 flat bar about 600mm long. Cut the slot with an angle grinder, a tap with a ball pein hammer usually loosens it easily.

Cheers,
Mick.

One small thing more to help undoing the fan.

Take a marker and draw an arrow on top of the radiator or somewhere close to indicate the direction for OPEN.
Or am I the only one dumb enough to struggle with it everytime... Before I made the arrow..

If the belt runs under the pulley, then it's right hand thread
Over the top of the pulley, left hand thread.

for 99% of vehicles anyway.

It's opposite if the engine rotates unconventionally.

Haha ... yeah.
Owning both Tdi and TD5(and a V8) this one always caught me out too.

Either I'd get used to either the Tdi or Td5 'handedness' and then initially do it wrong on the Td5 or Tdi ... especially when doing it up ... and I'd be :soapbox:, "go ON you stupid thing!!" ... and then realise my stupidity.

On that, similar vein, I was working at my job at a Datsun ( that'll age it ) workshop when my sister and mum appeared. They had a flat tyre at the local mall thing. Bloke had tried to help but couldn't get the wheel off. I nearly couldn't either, he'd got it so tight. Bloody Valiants.

I got caught out on an old Snoopy MAN, that'll date that.
Could not loosen the front left. Some clown had relined the brakes, undoing the stub axle nut to remove the hub and drum complete. On reassembly the wheels were mounted on opposite sides. :bat:

A freind went on trip to America and said when driving over there he used the old " right tighty, lefty loosey" when turning corners, so that he'd be on the correct side of the road.

Spot on, it is indeed.

I should have known that.... Probably did, in another life. Thanks.
