Compressor suddenly failed

Hi all

I had a new compressor put in just under 2 years ago which has been working fine. This morning whilst driving out of Bunnings in normal mode my wife said she felt a vibration through her seat and the compressor making almost a "burping hum" before the suspension warning light came on. The fault light continually comes now on and I'm unable to lift the vehicle, even though the compressor seems to "roar" - is it likely to be a disconnected or burst hose or has the unit completely failed?

Do you have access to a diagnostic tool? A quick look at the gallery pressure while it's running will give you an indicator.
Gallery pressure is measured absolute, so anything around 1 bar is atmospheric. Above that, the gallery is sealed which means the pipework is probably ok.

A roar would indicate something isn't quite right, but you knew that already.

If I was tackling it I'd start the car to get the compressor running and have a poke around underneath to see where the majority of the noise was coming from.

The extra weight due to loading it up with purchases can trigger a compressor failure. My D2's failed after loading it with paving stones and the D3's with sand and gravel. Two years is too short a life expectation, common faults to check are, the desiccant breather isn't blocked or worse has disintegrated and been drawn into the compressor. Also it sounds like it is running but not making air, so check if it has a leaking line, bag, valve block or the blow off valve is not seating due to desiccant. The compressor noise insulation can also fill with sand or mud and cause overheating.
