read any good books lately?

I have just read a paperback
"this Thing of Darkness"
by Harry Thompson

its an epic-- 750pages!

about a Captain Fitzroy and his cruises in HMS Beagle.(seach google on both)

near enough to a true story
and all the more astonishing for it,,

my previous book was an account of capt cook last voyage by hammond innes

gees true stories,, must be getting old,,,

Howard's War by Alison Broinowski.

It's a short book by Scribe Publications about most of the details of why we joined the Iraq War.

Very interesting read in 'how to bullsh*t to the Australian public and bomb, kill and maim innocent lives all for oil and trade agreements.

Not fiction, but I've just finished "Sand, Surgery and Siagon Tea" By Marshall Barr. A very good book detailing his experiences at 8 field ambulance in vietnam.

Rather eye opening. I think that i'll have to get a couple of more of the books taht detail the time that people spent as part of 2 & 8 field ambuilance, and 1 field hospital in vietnam.

Recent books include "The Voyage of Nicholas Downton 1614-15" (this was the second voyage to India of the East India Company - original documents edited by the Haklyut Society, 1938), the time travel trilogy by S.M.Stirling starting with "Island in the sea of Time", "A crack in the edge of the world" by Simon Winchester (San Francisco Earthquake).
Currently reading "Geophysics in the Affairs of Mankind" by Lawyer, Bates & Rice, "Acorna's Children" by McCaffrey & Scarborough, "Gondar" by Charles Luard, and "Essays" by Charles Lamb.

This is apart from magazines, which include LRO, Silicon Chip, Scientific American, Exploration Geophysics, Linux Format.

As you can tell I tend to have a number of books on the go at once.

The best non fiction book I have read recently was "Voodoo Science" by Robert Park. Covers all areas of "dodgy" science from cold fusion to homeopathy to the star wars program.

I reckon I'd like that one. Read a lot of books but I do like ones with a medical theme set in wartime.

Just finished an interesting read: "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" about a Tasmanian Whaling boat captain set in the early 1800's. By Robert Holden. One of those cheap reads you can pick up at QBD bookshops. In the history section. Not riveting reading but all the more interesting because its a true story. We reckon we have life hard.......

Iain M Banks' Sci Fi is worth a read.

"My Brothers Keeper" by Angela Kamper & Charles Miranda -- about the killing of Tony Hinds by Jai Abberton (Bra Boy) and his brother Koby Abbberton (world renown big wave surfer).

Great read, it is a Pulp Fiction meets Point Break, but all true and set 500m down the road.....
