110 Swivel Seal Confusion - FTC3401

Good afternoon All,

I am part way through rebuilding my swivel hubs on my 1984 110 V8 (with oil lubed swivel housings and wheel bearings), but I am very confused about this corteco swivel seal FTC3401. The outer lip on the new corteco seal is much thinner than the old corteco seal (see photos). The old seal looks like it would do a much better job of sealing the hub. The new seal looks like it would catch & hold dirt & mud! Am I worried about nothing? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Michael,

I have a box of all seals and bits to redo the county front axle on my RRC, came from Mario back in the day.

Swivel ball seal is Allmakes, made in UK, p/n LR059968.

Same p/n from here, where I get stuff from sometimes:

Land Rover Parts - SWIVEL PIN BEARING HOUSING - DEFENDER (https://www.britishautoparts.com.au/swivel_pin_bearing_housing___defender)

A search of that p/n comes up with british4wd corteco seal with the same p/n on the sticker on the packet , suits all 3 def models.

The p/n inside the corteco packet says 15510032.

The photo (old?) on their website shows a wide lip Corteco seal:

Thank you DL & Ron for your replies. I actually spoke with KLR this morning & they said they said I shouldn't have a problem with this seal. I'll fit them & see what happens. Thanks again, Edward

Without the seal being assembled it's difficult to tell whether the thinner lip would actually cause a problem.

When assembled does the thin lip contact the swivel ball all the way round ?
The outer lip is only a wiper so as long as it contacts all the way round there shouldn't be an issue.

It does make you wonder why they have changed the design though......

The outer lip does not contact the ball when assembled - there is roughly a 1 mm gap.

That doesn't make any sense.....
So you assembled the swivel ball back into the housing and fitted the seal retainer and there was a 1mm gap all round ??

Hi Colin,

Yep, I agree, it doesn't make sense to me either, but i've completely finished the job and there is a gap between the 'wiper seal' and the whole circumference of the swivel ball. I'm reluctant to push a feeler gauge into the groove, but i estimate the gap to be about 1 - 1.5 mm.

I emailed Corteco earlier in the week (thank you for finding their contact email), but i haven't heard back from them yet.
