I love water crossings, just something about it that gets the bloody pumping, i dont know if its the thrill of not knowing when the water will stop getting deep and start to get shallower as you climb out but i love it. Top pics fellas. Matt

I love it when I get to the other side without the engine running like a hairy goat...that bloody distributer is so sensitive.
I can't wait till I get myself a diesel Defender. I'm sick of having to worry about electrics. I want to fly through water like this:
Try this in my rangie and it will behave like its only got 10HP. I'm working on it though.

damn, awesome pics guys! A question for you tho. After a river crossing like that (deeper than the axels) do you do an oil change asap? What other 'servicing' does the Disco require after that kind of workout?

Get you self a Land Rover gen Dissy and with Lucas leads and champion spark plugs then the V8 will be alot better with water . Had a rangie set up like thids and it never had problems with water. WEll not compaired to other V8's anyway. The Landy Dissy's fit alot better and keep out the water and steam

Hi Stooge, I normally do oil changes in everything after a weekend or trip of 4wding that has involved lots of deep water crossings, but Diff breathers can help to stop water being sucked in to your diff when it comes into contact with the cold water, oil seals are designed to keep oil in not water out. what eh
Nah mine has still got the same oil in the alxes as it had all way round aus. Checked it was still oil colour and not caffe cream colour:D
But as it is left it
But have higher than standard oil breathers, so that helps,
Went though a river crossing on the Savanha way that was 3' deep and flowing. Pick up the car and moved it sideways and the trailer was 90 degrees to the car when we got out the other side. Two Toyotas were waiting on the other side and saw us go though, and then stop and get out. And with the defnder of couse a load of water came out the door when we opened it (left the vents open again D'oh , and water pored in though them). They both look at us and said together f*** that, we will wait a couple of days for it to go down..
But as we were 350 k's along the track and 100 k's to the end i was not about to go back
Must admit it the wife was noit too keen , but i was saying to her don't worry done this loads of times. It will be alright.
But inside going f***ing Hell

I have a Lucas distributer (with electronic gear). Is that the one you mean (or is it called a Land Rover distributer)?
Do the Lucas leads cover the plugs better or something?

Nah we just found in the Uk that Gen land rover Lucas Dissy and Lucas leads and Champion spoark plugs made it alot better in water than after market stuff that did not fir poperly. after all that is what they were made for
Also have found fitting a steering guard helps as it stop water coming up from behind the rad and hitting the dissy

Yep made it thru. The shallowest path takes you right up against that island I'm heading for. I got some water in the door seals and lifted the carpets for a couple of days to dry. I also then used black silicon to improve the seals at the door bottoms(Ie reposition the rubber dowells and smooth out the gap at the join) and this worked a treat later on.
I changed the rear diff oil at Laura on the way south as it had got milky-I changed the front when I got home. The transmission/transfer c are fine-thier breathers are much higher. Still working myway thru checking the hubs/wheel bearings.

Edddo,
I remember that particular crossing. Someone had come to grief in it not long before we went thru. As I recall there was a deep hole and if you took the wrong line, thats where you came went for the deep swim.
You know the old advise about checking creek crossings on foot before driving thru? Well Numpty made me wade thru all the crossings. Maybe he was hoping a hungry croc would take me:angel:
He was kind and didn't make me wade thru that one. We got thru no worries also (in our SIII Stage I)

Yep....if you strayed too far to the left it drops to about 5-6 feet. Nice swimming weather while we were there. No crocs in those inland streams is there? Not in the moving water anyway?? Who knows? What color is your series landy-there was a lwb, yellow one drying out on the north side of the crossing when we went thru early July.

There are crocs all through the top end of Australia. They get salties in the Katherine Gorge, how far inland is that? My Aunt and Uncle used to have 16 km of river frontage on the Daly River, 200 km from the sea and they got their fair share of salties, especially in more recent years.
Since hunting crocs has been banned the numbers have skyrocketed. Younger, stronger crocs get the good coastal waterways, older ones get shunted further and further upstream. Mind you, being eaten by an old croc still wouldn't feel too flash...:o

Having said that, crocs prefer murky water so that you don't see them coming. As long as someone hasn't been through the creek crossing shortly beforehand you can usually see in the water quite easily.
This does NOT mean that you do not walk the crossing first, just that you should be able to see if there are any crocs about :o

Just check the oil & check for water contamination... If water has got in, it'll be a milky coffee colour instead of an 'oil' colour!
As with everything, prevention is better than cure... Make sure that the breathers are extended (preferably to roof level) and when approaching the water try & do it slowly. As Matt (Ace) has already mentioned, hot components getting dunked into cold water have a tendancy to suck in water as they're cooling. The other thing is to make sure you approach gently and not at speed!!! Hitting the water hard & fast will only force water & mud past the seals and into the driver train.

Edddo,
Ours is Sahara Dust ( beige in other words) and a fitting colour for a vehicle dubbed Dune Car by the kids, but its now retired to the underneath of the house while the garage sports a brandnew defender (10 weeks old now and 10,000Km on the clock!!)
I was relying on memories back to '94ish, but would love to do that trip again one day. For some reason that creek crossing just sticks in the memory!!

My wife took the pic. Would you believe she took it too late? This is at Nolan's Brooke on the OTL, and not a second before the entire R/H side of the bonnet was under water, to the point where the L/H side of the bonnet was just starting to have water come over the top.
Spitting that she mistimed the photo, and damned if I was gonna go back and do it again :) As she only had a film camera, we didn't find out until we got back and got it processed :(

Well that answers my question. We were there in July. I sit 7" over standard and wan't real impressed with the depth, left wondering how more normal Disco's drive through. I still recall turning up and there were snorkellers in the water, and in the tyre tracks which were the most direct route through, they were standing at about tittie deep! Aloa's girlfriend took control of his Defender and went straight through the deepest part! She got through ok, but had a little flood from the front vents.
The fella in front of me in this pic was standing on a tree root so I wouldn't hit it - he jumped out of the way when I aimed for him.

your shot is taken almost exactly the same spot as mine-you can see the benefit of your lift--assuming depth of creek is similar in both shots.
Thats as deep as I have taken a 4wd and happy to leave that record unbroken....until I have 7" lift.

My general theory, is that you really need to question it if its deeper than sill depth, but that was one crazy crossing. I'm glad I did it now, but 2 or 3 days before this I'd only just fitted a replacement radiator after putting the fan into it. I think this one at the start of the OTL was a bit deeper though.

I'm pretty sure they only get Freshwater crocs in Catherine Gorge, been there a number of times swam there actualy scared a few off the banks, they rent canoes at the start of the gorge, you wouldn't be able to if there were salties in there.
I've seen them further down in the Daly (the Gorge on the Katherine River BTW), infact from our campsite on the Daly spotted them at night, but not in the Gorge!
Things could have changed in the last 10 years but I'm sure they haven't.

OK, here`s a couple of photos crossing a stream in North Devon just before I sold my Camel late last year. It had p1ssed down rain all the pevious night and this water was flowing bloody fast thru here. I does`nt look it in the photo, but the water was racing thru there.

http://usera.imagecave.com/cols110/DSC_3137.JPG
Was good fun, but a bit worrying being the first vehicle to plunge on in with the speed that the water was flowing. I ended up with a few inches of water right thru the old girl, good thing the door seals were knackered as it just drain straight back out again. :D
At least with the TDI you wer`nt scared to plough into stuff like that, but I must admit, I`d think twice about doing the same thing with my TD5.
Thats the only thing wrong with living in the middle of a desert as we are now, I don`t get to play in stuff like that any more. :(

even if your door seals were buggered it I notice from this thread that it is traditiion for defender/county/series drivers to go through water crossings with vents open........hmmmm? Must be a logical reason for this phenomenon.
cols110
9th September 2006, 11:13 PM
Vents definately closed, to bloody cold to leave em open, but the windows were open, maybe not such a good idea.
The biggest problem is when the water rolls into the grill for the vent on top of the front wing, you instantly get a fogged up windscreen as the water hits the heater matrix, this time round the heater motor almost had a hernea, I had to turn it off for about 1/2 hr until it dried out.
Here is a couple of photo`s of where we were camped. This in camping in the UK coming into winter, check out the puddle around the fire.
And another one in the morning, before we set off, and after the rain had stopped.

note 1 :the blue jappa sunk up to bonnet and a white 100 jappa floated (not 2 bad for a over weight 8" higher TLC.)
Love the Disco, took the correct line and it didn't float or drop into the hole. However it was the only one to fill with water, my excuse was this is a design feature to stop the car from floating. Besides only leaked in the back seat area and I don't sit there.
Note the date, two days after Tsunami and I got that nick name for my efforts:D The picture taker was swamped. Teach them to own a Jappa.
Have done more in the High country (top trip all Landies and ran in to the Sydney LRO Club) however it has taken me the best part of an hour to work out how to put the above photos on this site.
That just means that I need to play more:)
