View Full Version : Remove an LT95 Transfer Case from a LT95 Gearbox Unit.

I have an old LT95 gearbox/transfer case unit lying around home and my mind has been wondering what to do with it. I know that people have cut off the transfer case as a complete unit and grafted it onto a R380 gearbox.

Now anybody on the forum actually done this? If so is it difficult and as a minimum I assume some sort of adaptor plate is needed and a spud shaft needed to join the R380 output to the LT95 Tfr case input. Interested to hear from anyone with experience in doing it.

Now I would agree that just replacing a LT95 unit with a R380/LT230 unit would be the way to go but I am thinking about my 101 which has its winch driven by the LT95 via a sideways shaft so a LT95 tfr case is really needed.

Appreciate and thoughts

no need to the lt230t that comes on the back of an R380 and many others is near the same strength as the LT95 (espescially if you get the one with the Tapered bearing setup) The lt230Q IMHO is stronger and quieter.

you can also have it fitted with a torque biasing Diff. If its off already you can also send it off to get the Itermediate shaft holes drilled and sleeved to aleviate the leak and shaft drift issue.

The LT230 can be fitted with a PTO and IMHO itd be a much simpler job to manufacture a drop/side drive gearbox to put onto the back or underside of the LT 230 than hack and mod an lt95 tcase

I've never heard of a LT95 transfer on a R380. Not that means it hasn't been done.
Ritter's used to use the transfer section of the LT95 with an auto, Torqueflight maybe, in early Range Rovers, I think it may have been the "factory auto" in Aus before the factory did an auto.

Thanks Dave I agree the Lt230 is a better transfer case but I am not sure I have the capability to built a 90 degree angle gearbox to fit the under side of the LT230.

Has been done and is relatively easy but I just cannot find how at the moment.

I have the LT 95 TC behind a C9, was a complete Ritters engineered / manufactured conversion (C4, C9 and maybe BW35). Whole lot sits behind a 350.

Was a JLR option in Oz in 81 ish.........info straight from Noel at Ritters on the morning I was off to vroads to change the trans specs.

Bellhousing (3.5 to auto) was custom Ritters casting, adaptor casing (C4/9 to LT95 TC) also Ritters casting........both are works of art and put the TC in the stock position so no mods to mounts and stock prop shafts.

AFAIK the LT 95 TC section was machined off in a lathe.

From memory I could see the marks from this on the front face of the TC when all the parts were separate before installation in my 74 POS. Also from memory someone posted that info at the time which made me look.

Someone up Horsham way was selling the same combo (maybe C4) on aulro about a year ago.

cheers, DL
