So i popped a few covers off under the old girl today to have a look at things, and familarise myself with where things are for when i do a few fluid changes.
I noticed in the attached picture, that it there felt like a bit of fluid/oil (i orignally thought water) on the section of the transfer case.
There is no noticeable drops on the ground, was just a bit of fluid on my finger, and can see it's a bit dirtier.

Also, i have noticed a slight vibration through the steering wheel whilst driving. Trying to isolate when it's occuring as been difficult. I first thought transmission, but stationary there is no shuddering or weird feel through the wheel. There is no noise that i can ascertain. I did have a look, and it's possible the the crankshaft pulley maybe wobbling, would this cause a vibration through the steering wheel?
Keen to know thoughts.

Have the wheel balance checked, starting with the front wheels.

Drain plug could be very slightly leaking or the case half bolts may be loose you can also check. If you take off the fill cap and fluid is to that level I wouldn’t be too bothered. Oil can also blow backwards from an issue further upwind.

As strange as it sounds, i think it may have been water.
I don't know where the water would have come from.
It was clear (which i wouldn't expect with 50,000km since last change)
As i had been touching many other parts of the car, in my fingers it felt kinda slippery.
It was also sitting in the shield that protects the transmission pan.
All those fluids will be replaced hopefull this coming week, or try and complete on the weekend.
I can then follow.
Graeme - I think you may be onto something, now you said that, I do remember the guy had only recently sold the tuff ants that were on the car. So yes i'm thinking that could be the case, and i'm in my head for all other options.
Did get 2nd opinion on camshaft pulley, they weren't too concerned. I will keep it as a thing to do in the not too distant future though.

My transfer case weeps. I’ve read (not sure how real it is) that the cases become porous. The amount is enough that it’s dirty and wet but not enough that it really drips. This pretty much sums up the underside of my D4. Great rust protection.
