I've loaded what purports to be the new Vista desktop/theme.
just as a comment I find the new glass/see thru screens quite annoying,,
Hopefully there's something more than this in the new OS to entice me to build an entirely new PC so I can run Vista.
was it Bytemark saying he was playing with
Vista RC1??

Last thing I read about Vista said it would be compatible with most PC's built in the last couple of years.
The only thing that was supposed to be an exception was possibly the graphics card.

From what I have heard Vista (when it eventually turns up) will require much more memory and speed than XP. But most current computers are way above the minimum requirements for XP. But would you want to try and run XP on the minimum configuration? The fancy graphics touted for XP will require an accelerated graphics card, but it will not be compulsory to use these. As the OS has not been finalised it is a bit hard to say just what the requirements will be.

G'day Pedro,
Yes it was me...
I've been playing with a variety of Vista pre releases... from the earlier ones that seemed to specialise in the color blue... ( at least on my centrino duo- Laptop - even though it is labelled as Vista Compatible:mad:) through to the more recent.. I haven't yet loaded the RC1 version.. as I loaded the pre RC1 that was made available through MSDN about 10 days before RC1 was released...
Anyway... I don't mind it... it sort of grows on you. (When XP first came out - I hated that - looked like windows by fisher price... but it grew on me too..)
I certainly wouldn't rush out to upgrade an existing XP install... I've also been playing with the upcoming office version (2007)... again only beta at this time... but very different user interface which I like... but will be rather challenging for many of the non tech types I get paid by...
If the Aero glass thing annoys you.... just turn it off..

hmm, from what I read it wont run on anything older than a month or two,,
has to be 64bit cpu
if XP needs 512mg of ram, vista will need a LOT more
basically means a brand new PC for most of us,,
IT wizards please post now!!!:D

It will get faster. There is a lot of debug code in Release Candidates which comes out for the final release.
Lucky both my machines are AMD 64s with lots of RAM, but I guess Vista will force everyone into yet anouther round of hardware upgrades.

my old amd 64 3200+ with 1.5g ram and x300 pcie passes the tests..
pity the amd are so slow at anything heavy compared to the intels. my really old 3.0 intel 478 p4 whoops it's butt clean out of the court.
vista, = virus attracting version of OSX divided by 5, IMHO.
if you havent used OSX on the new intel cpu'ed macs you have no idea.

......... but I guess Vista will force everyone into yet another round of hardware upgrades.
Not everyone - only those who feel they have to run Windows, and even then only the ones who feel they need to have the latest and greatest. The actual number who will be FORCED to upgrade will be pretty small.

Basically because Canon will not release the details of my scanner so that a Linux driver can be written for it.

I just checked the compatibility of mine (as posted by One Iota - thanks Mahn)
Everything passed except the graphics card (only GeForce4 MX440) and the sound (built onto motherboard and drivers not working at the moment:twisted:).
I am only running 2.6G P4 and 512M Ram
I still won't be upgrading too soon though - just wetting my feet with Fedora on another machine:eek:

I guess it is more bloatware...something that MS excels in.
I spec'd my laptop to two GB of ram and a graphics card with 256 Mb of memory... it will cope..... but for what gain?
I dumbed down the XP GUI because after 20 minutes I felt nauseous with the pea green colour scheme.

Not particularly - but I hadn't heard about the copiers. But their attitude on secrecy of their devices meant that when I was looking for a new printer recently they didn't even get on the list, let alone the short list. On the other hand, I have nothing to complain about with my Canon camera - interfaced with gtkam without a hint of trouble.
