Here is my latest purchase (if the pic works).

It is very ugly and has a Holden 6 in it, but the addition of my spare 3.5 V8 should make it bearable.

It doesn't look that ugly.

Bigjon is someone trying to make a L/R look like an Austin Champ?;)

Geez fella's, it's a Series 1 that's had a Holden donk shoehorned in

Yes Jon, it's ugly

Looks ripe for modification, seeing that it's already been bastardised.
A hybrid in the offing, maybe....

Yep, ugly Series One with bad body mods. I have an old two door Rangie parked out the back, I think the two should combine. Series one Hybrid with coils, 3.5 V8 and auto trans should be just the thing for driving around Alice.

I'd um , check that roll bar for sturdyness:p

Here is another view. I think it will have to be pulled right to bits and I will have to start over. I think it will be a long term, when I can afford to do stuff sort of project...

The feller selling it originally wanted $1300 for it. He says the gearbox has been reconditioned. I am not paying anywhere near that amount, because all of the running gear will come out so the Rangie stuff can be jammed in there instead.

Is that one road registered? I can't see that I will spend that amount of time and/or money on mine. But if it goes and I can register it, then it will be good for all the tracks around here.

just going through engineering!!!

What chassis did you use? I don't know if I should adapt the coil springs to the Series chassis, or think about modifying the Rangie chassis. To my way of thinking, modifying the Series chassis could give less hassles legally because it is so old and doesn't have to comply with much in the way of ADRs.

I am having the same thoughts at the moment. If you use a 81 rangie chassis on a 79 series body would the car have to have ADR requirments from 79, 81 or 2006?

ADRs go off the chassis numbers year - so if you use an 82 Rangie then it uses 1982 ADRs.

BUT the stupid thing in NSW is if I rechassis my Defender with a brand new gal chassis then the whole car has to comply with 2006 ADRs as in their eyes its a new car!!!

This is a 1984 Rangie chassis I started my 100" Hybrid on a few years ago with the S1 88" body "stretched" in the rear tub!!!

Easiest way is to use the Series Chassis and fab / mount coil spring hangers, outriggers etc onto the Series chassis - then its still the original Series rego and chassis number. All really depends on what you want and its wheelbase.

This was always ment to be a 100" wheelbase.

They woundn't care, all they seem to want is the chassis number - got to enter something into that damn 'puter thingy!!!

LRHI know - been there, done that ;) .

Often passing the engineer is the easy part.
It's the Blue Slip bloke you have to watch out for !!

I think I'd better leave it at that.

Well John (sorry for coming in late on this thread - just jumped from your post of the "Old Landys" thread)

It looks like the guards on your S1 are reasonable, except for the lights in the front of them. You can replace that little panel either new or second hand or fold up a replacement.

Can I ask where your radiator is? Was it cut into the rear of the front cross member or placed out in front of it? The usual job was to cut out aboyt 3 " and weld in a piece of angle then move the radiator forward and shorten up the back of the grill/radiator support panel. You also had to cut out the back of the LHS headlamp bucket. Most people welded in a new flat back to the bucket but not essential.

If you want to fit a RR engine transmission you will find that the original 4 speed is very long and too close to the rear diff for good articularion with the coils. You are better with something a bit shorter. You will also find that the oil filter is right on the front diff so needs to be moved.

Regards
Diana

So hypothetically speaking if you got a chassis of the same age or older you should be less hassel.

BigJon

I would have to have a look see to check on the radiator. I can't remember exactly how it is mounted. The transmission that I have and would like to fit is a 3 speed auto (C4) mated to an 4 speed type transfer case. I guess I could always hang the rear axle a bit further out the back for extra propshaft length, then modify the tub to suit.

Someone from the NT please correct me on this IF I am wrong...

In the NT providing you rebuild/fabricate from new a copy of the chassis for a vehicle and install it you only have to comply with the regs for the year of the vehicle was originally made...

Incase Ive worded that badly I mean as in I strip my 66 IIa skull drag the chassis down to the local welding/fabrication shop and say "Gday mate how much to make a copy of that thing sans all the rust, crap welds, repairs, extra holes I dont need and the bends?" then take the end result of that particular hole in the wallet and bolt it under the bits I pulled off earlier I only have to comply with the 1966 regs.
