World has ample oil supplies, Exxon Mobile chief says

The head of the petroleum company Exxon Mobil has moved to debunk what he says is a myth about an imminent oil shortage.
Exxon Mobil chief executive Mark Nolan has told 600 petroleum engineers at the Asia-Pacific Oil and Gas Conference in Adelaide that there is ample oil in the world to supply future demand.
Proponents of the peak oil theory say supplies will start to dwindle in less than 20 years.
Mr Nolan says there is still at least three trillion barrels of oil left in the world, and consumers have used just one trillion barrels so far.
Mr Nolan has also rejected the carbon emissions trading scheme, saying it is not a long-term solution, and has questioned the overall environmental benefits possible through alternative fuels such as ethanol.
The conference runs until Wednesday.

In EXXON speak that should read: "Shall we revert to Al Gore now?" Very difficult to do really when you think about it.

I used to work for an international hotel company where whenever someone was required to get back to someone else the term revert was used...and whenever someone was having an idea they were envisioning: Drilling down is key, moving forward.

They've probably already discovered the extra oil reserves, but announcing them will put downward pressure on the price of oil. They may as well have us pay the speculators worst case scenario price for oil.

It's a bit like BP, they can pay money to do maintenance on their Alaskan pipeline, or they can let it go till it breaks down. Then the profit from the spike in oil prices will pay for repairs.

Announcements of new oil reserve discoveries are timed to suit the stock market.

for more consipracy theories consult your imagination.

Exxon have a secret store of oil somewhere on an Alaskan beach near Mcmurdo Sound. They've hidden it under the rocks and in the sediments and in the livers of Humpback whales.

All they need to do to get it is boil the whales. Brilliant.

Does anyone think its funny that 'they've' just discovered a new field in the Gulf of Mexico? A field which they say is bigger than what is under the middle east...the gulf is right on America's southern border, is relatively shallow and has been drilled for years. They've known for years...it's all n the timing, eh...

I've heard this story about 'sands' which hold huge oil reserves in the far north of the planet, they know all about them. Apparently to refine the product is a but difficult, but no more so than drilling frozen Alaska.

Have a look at sites about our gas underground, sooo much...

There's so much oil, gas and coal, it is just nuts, but therein lies the problem, burning the oil will (when the orientals get fully automobilised) cause massive air pollution. Beijing, Shanghai and other cities are already a total disaster air quality wise and in the east, vehicle penetration is only about 10%, but GM and others are flat out trying to sell cars into this huge market. Another USA but ten times the population size - yup we want everwun to drive a hummer or an expedion or some other big rig.
