Flamethrower now an option on S. African cars

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Crime-obsessed South Africans have a powerful new weapon with which to stop likely criminals: the car flamethrower.

Casting a man-high fireball, reportedly with no damage to the paint, the Blaster has been placed on 25 South African vehicles since its introduction last month.

At 3,900 rand ($655), it offers a cheap, dramatic defense against carjackers. It has yet to be deemed illegal.

South African courts allow killing if convinced that it's in self-defense. The defense is not unheard of. In last year's 13,000 carjackings, criminals often brandished weapons or used them with little provocation.

The Blaster squirts liquefied gas from a bottle in the automobile's trunk through two nozzles, located under the front doors. The gas is then ignited by an electric spark, with fiery consequences.

Both sides flame at the same time, regardless of whether the attack is coming from just one side of the vehicle, or whether passersby are on the other side. But the breadth and depth of blast can be modified according to individual preference.

Fire blinds, not kills, maker assures
Blaster inventor Charl Fourie, 33, disputed concerns that the flamethrower could burn someone to death.

"My personal feeling is that it would definitely blind a person. He will never see again," he said

Firefighters, medical personnel and the police agree 100 percent "that it will never kill a person," Fourie asserted. "This is definitely non-lethal.... A person is not going to stand there for a minute while you roast him. It will fend off the attacker, and that's the end of it."

Fourie has filed an international patent application. He anticipates thousands of orders nationally and from abroad. "The demand is huge," he said.

First customer a Johannesburg police official
The first buyer, Police Superintendent David Walkley of Johannesburg's crime intelligence unit, is satisfied the Blaster is legal, provided it is used correctly.

"It depends entirely on the circumstances and whether you can justify self-defense," he said.

"Yes, there are certain risks in using it, but there are also risks in not having anything at all."

Very Austin Powers, I cant believe it's legal.

I'd prefer an ejector seat though, or a Shark with a Laser attached to it's head

Some folks I know who moved from Jo'burg reckon that stopping at red lights is taking a big risk due to hijacks and robberies...safer to run the lights.

I'd heard that BMWs made in SA had this device (or similar) as a factory option.

Should be easy to pick out the car thieves after they get a face full of that. They'll be the crispy ones at the next party.

I wan't one fitted to the Rangie, not that anyones going to be silly enough to stop me and ask "Nicely" for me to get out.
But think of the other uses. I could help do hazard reductions with the local R.F.S. You could bbq your steak on the way there.
The list is endless.
Just don't think I want the kids to lock me out of the car though.!!

Lots of car hijack victims in South Africa have not just lost their cars but their lives as well.

If someone has a gun pointing at me outside my car, this person isn't too particularly concerned about my well being, so neither should I be if I had to burn them to protect myself and my passengers.

Now thats what I call doing a burn out... :D:D

Must be real popular. The item is dated December 1998. I have not heard of any car jackers being cooked in the last 8 years.

What ever happened to oil slicks, machine gun mounted behind the headlights and rocket launchers from the sun roof. :D

My family is ex-SA (been here > 30yrs), and a friend told us that the car jackers have already developed a defence against the flame thrower. They wait a safe distance away from, the vehicle and simply shoot the driver through the glass, then take the vehicle. What does all this say about the value of human life in SA.....

When i was staying at a mate's place in Jo'berg, i heard and witnessed a few carjackings, most of the time they will shoot thru the glass and then pull you out and drive off. even heard of someone trying to cut fingers off to get their rings ! I used the public transport system once and when my mate came to pick me up from the train station he said "what the f#ck were you thinking, white's dont use PT !"

I am based in Jozi and while crime is a very serious issue in this country and tends to be more violent than most can imagine I can assure you that the flame thrower is not standard fitment on the BMW and it is not legal

we are not all driving around in armoured tanks shooting at anyone that looks at us ;)

in fact, with a defender you are probably as safe as you can be - who in their right mind would steal one :p

Hi

I am a ex joburger too! :D been here for 8 years and going good.

I never saw any of these flame throwers around and I dont know if they actually took off, BUT what I do remember is not stopping at traffic lights at night driving to my girlfriends place. Only in the crappy parts of town thought..

Its mostly the tourists that get taken out as they dont know better and go into dangerous areas. Yes i sure am still as much joburger as I was when i left 8 years ago and have sympathy for the victims that go through the hijack. Most people have no idea of what it would be actually like anyway..
And its the illegals in SA that come over the border and dont have any qualifications or skills to find a job. They then turn to hijacking too easy..

Cheers
