What are the things that would cover a spark plug in rust (Or looks like rust) on a petrol engine.
At the moment we beleive it is a head gasket and the parts have been ordered. I just want to check before we have two vehicles in peices on the drive. SWMBO is not happy about the state of her car. I have been corrected SWMBO with out question:eek:

It gets cold down your way have you considered condensation on the plugs?
Sludge from a leaky old engine?

What car are we talking about here?

97 Fairlane 6 cylinder dual fuel. The thing has a leak we can't find and is now using between 1 and 1.5 litres of water per 100 km. Sometimes you see a pudle forming under the car but havn't confirmed the leak yet. The car has only run on LPG for the last 2 years and has 350,000km on it.

LPG, could this have dried out the gaskets and formed a leak?

I'm not really an expert though, look at taxi's they drive forever on LPG, try coolant or a die of some kind to find the leak

Tracing water leaks - don't we just love it.

My dad use to use talcum powder - use to sprinkle it all over the engine especially where leaks are suspected - and the leak would leave a little trail in the powder.

Easy enough to wash off afterwards as well - plus you have a nice sweet smelling engine.

At least these are really easy to do the head on. Off in about 1.5 hours, back on in 2.

Pitty I didn't take the bet with a friend and a mechanic I know they both were wanting to bet the front head bolt had snapped. I should have said the spark is no 1 cylinder only. I have pulled the rocker off and the gasket for that needs replacing so I know why there was so much oil and crap around the engine now. Tomorrow I will rip the manifolds and accessories off and check hte welsh plugs before removing the head. At least the kit is only 130 with new bolts. I just had the Why remove the head unless you know its gone feeling today thats all. It is nicer than working on the TD5 motor but why put the disy under the manifold so its a pig to get to.

alloy cross flow ford heads are notorius for corrosion, ive welded up hundreds when i was doing my trade.
are number 1 and 6 pots worse than the others??

try 2 bottles of chemi weld in the system, just a temp fix till you fix the 130, then you can strip the coon car:twisted:

Edd if your lpg is the type that has a heat exchange ie the one that has engine feeding water to the unit it may well be a problem in that.

I didn't think of that. Yea it is that setup. Oh well time to find a match and replace it with a Landy:twisted:

I was doing the gearbox today (and tomorrow) on an EL and found a weeping hose under the passenger side near the front wheel. It looks like it is the coolant restrictor for the heater, but I am not sure.
Just make sure you check the hoses from underneath too:)

Yep I bought that pipe as its a common one but mine was fine. I know its the head as no 1 cylinder was full of coolant. I have pulled everything appart except for the head bolts as my good drivers are at a friends and i just couldn't shift them.
