Basicly, I wouldn't be using IE to start with. Security holes gallore. It's not like there are not better browsers around for free.

Agree and I also use Mozilla Firefox but some of the download managers I use only have full functionality with IE. It is swapping between the browsers that has caused the problem of not updating AULO pages until I hit refresh. I am sure it is some setting in IE that is causing the problem but I don't now what.

can only be session cookies IMHO.... under the privacy tab in IE then advanced the tick "overide automatic cookie handling" and "always allow session cookies".
i swap between mozilla and ie6 and 7 all the time and never get the problem (fingers crossed for the future...) but i have session cookies modified as above.

firefox has its problems as well, just not so heavily advertised.
IE is definetly more dangerous though.

I tried FireFox but it kept crashing my computer. IE didn't.

If you're not too computer savy - and, yes, I know this will upset some people - the easiest thing is to use IE and run an off the shelf Firewall/Security/AV product like Nortons or McAfee. I say this because with automated updates turned on for windows and the security software then you have a reasonable degree of safety with out too many hassles. For e-mail I'd suggest sticking with Outlook Express for the same reasoning (as much as I hate the program).
If you're OK to play a bit then move to Firefox and Thunderbird for e-mail.
The other option for e-mail is to just use Hotmail or Yahoo accounts.
And if you're using a Mac then everything's different anyway and you wouldn't have problems with IE etc.
And if you have an IT savy mate then ask them about helping you using the Remote Assistant in Windows Messenger. This is a great simple way to support someone and can really sort out problems.

What browser & email software do you recommend to people Inc?
depends on their needs and abilities :P
as a general rule..
email = TheBat is they dont need intergrated calendaring with PDA's etc etc. latest Outlook and Command Antivirus if they do.
browser = firefox or opera and you simply have to use IE for some things or lose the functionality.
i simply refuse to sell NIS, McAfee or PcCillian as the free product ranges available are superior in nearly every way and dont impede system usage to the levels these products do.

Sorry to hassle you again Inc, but what....
free anti-virus do u recommend? (now you made me feel like a noob, as I use NAV2005)
free firewalls/security software do you recommend? (I run ZoneAlarm, Peerguardian2, Sybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE personal, & Spyware Blaster)
what system utils do you recommend all of us lowlife XP users, use to keep XP running as good as it can.
Arrrr.... stuff it....if you have time, why not list all your favorite software (antivirus, image viewing/editing, zip/arj/lhz/etc software, etc, etc, etc) you use, that the users of this forum might find helpful. I am always on the look out for new software to make my life a bit easier, and I am sure there are a lot of punters here that would be the same.

throw zonealarm away--
Try kerio4 instead,,
CCleaner,, to keep the box clean--(UNTICK the YAHOO box--)
try Spybot search and destroy
adaware is fine
keep them both up to date.
if you think the risk is ok,
use AVG,, its free. but there in lies the risk--
lots of PROFESSIONAL PC types on here( not me!!),,,
just depends what your trying to protect---;)

Found the problem to my original post - so simple
Under the General Tab under internet settings, there is a settings menu for Temporary Internet files. The Nvr box was ticked for "Check for newer pages" - I changed it to Auto and all is now fixed.
Thanks for everyone who offerred help.
