Welp
the bearings in the centre idler pulley, fan support shaft (the big one with the bearing in the timing case cover) are shot on my 300TDi.
does the whole timing case cover get replaced or is there a replaceable bearing at the center of it all?
part numbers ?
any idea of the costs ?
does the pulley hub press off or screw off ?
the bearing in the aircon clutch pack feels like it should be replaced as well, anyone got a clue with it as well ?
lalalala i love my landy... lalala its laugh or cry lalala :dbcry:

There is a replacable bearing and the timing case cover does not have to come off. The bearing is the same as the other two idlers, so it is wise to replace all three at the same time - then you can forget about it for another 100,000kms or so. KBC Bearing part No. is C3G14 (not sure what genuine is) and they were about $7 each a few years ago. Dimensions are 40mmOD x 17mmID x 12mm wide. The one that you seem to have the trouble with is a bit tricky to get off - it's been a while since I did the last one and can't quite remember what the trick is - but there IS an easy way so give it some thought before racing into it.

Oops sorry - picked up on the word 'idler pulley' and went off without reading your post fully.
Looks like yours is a more complex job than just the idler pulleys.

The fan pulley bearing in made by INA, but you can't buy them separate from the front cover - over $400.
If the bearing is just a bit noisy, pull the cover off, you will see a seal that can be removed (if you are careful) from the bearing, then flush the bearing out, pack it with long life grease, then re-fit the seal.
The bearing in the air con compressor clutch is a common deep groove ball bearing with seals both sides - sorry can't remember the number.

Inc, genuine is the whole timing cover. I replaced mine as a 'just in case' @ 178,000km when I was doing the timing belt back in January, cost $440 incl., then three weeks later saw one of the Aussie ebay vendors have the correct bearing on it's lonesome for approx $80-90........... :(

We have these bearings on our website on this link

It is part number ERR7146BRG, price is $115.50
You will need a hydraulic press to do this job. When replacing the bearing, the bearing together with the flange that the pulley bolts to must be pressed out of the cover together. Then the flange is removed from the bearing. If you try to remove the flange from the bearing while still in the cover you WILL BREAK the flange. Any workshop with a press will be able to do this job for you.

Drop into your local papershop and look at the August issue of Land Rover Enthusiast (LRE) - it has a D90 with portal axles on the cover - page 120 has an article on what a guy with a Tdi in South Africa did to remedy the same problem you have. ( Although why it dosen't mention ERR7146BRG I don't know)

Can you aslo get a new shaft, as mine has the thread broken where the fan bolts up.
$400+ is a bit hard

gotta say i am more than a little peeved with the truck at the moment...
bloody odd little things that should be simple things turn to into a $400 job in an instant...
have just spent near on a grand doing all the bearings and a power steer pump, checked the bearing that has now gone when i did the others and there was not the slightest bit of noise or any excessive play and that was only a month or so ago.
and just to top me off the drivers side door lock has decided it doesnt want to open with the key most of the time, you have to crank it hard to get it to go the last little bit to unlock...
and i bet thats another $400 job as well...
anyone wanting to swap their rangie for a tdi disco give me a yell
