View Full Version : Proud to be an Australian

Last week I was in Melbourne attending a conference. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.

Moving through the terminal was a group of soldiers in their uniforms, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering. When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red blooded Australian who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families.

Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work, and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal. Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran up to one of the male soldiers. He knelt down and said "hi," the little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her. The young soldier didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy. Suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.

The mother of the little girl, who said her daughters name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Corporal and had been in Afghanistan for 5 months now. As the mom was explaining how much her daughter, Courtney, missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up. When this temporarily single mum was done explaining her situation, all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second. Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie-talkie. They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it.

After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, "I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you." He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He finished by saying "Your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon."

The mum at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mum.

I was standing no more than 6 feet away as this entire event unfolded. As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause. As I stood there applauding and looked around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own. That young soldier in one last act of moment turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices. At the end of the day, it's good to be an Australian.

RED FRIDAYS

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Australian's who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for Country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions.

Many Australian's, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Australiasupports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every Australian who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make Australiaon every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football team. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before Australiais covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever,

certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is..."We need your support and your prayers".

Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear something red every Friday.

IF YOU AGREE -- THEN SEND THIS ON

IF YOU COULD NOT CARE LESS THEN HIT THE DELETE BUTTON. IT IS YOUR CHOICE.

THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED---- SO WEAR RED! --- Lest we Forget, Lest we Forget.

Bah - humbug

Sorry Weiry

OK, for support to the troops, their is no quaivering on this.

However, our political arm has a lot to answer for. Fortunately, I do not travel abroad these days, however, if I did, I would be embarrassed being associated with the policies and practices of our government.

We are not a free state in the true sense, in fact we are quite censored. Our Censorship Board Grossly over censors content

The Ferret has his head up Bush. We have the perception of not being able to think for ourselves. We should take a leaf out of Canada (Not the Maple) or New Zealand.

We do not demand justice or repatriation for our own citizens ('Hicks')

They Lie through their teeth, (AWB)

Afghan, Yes. Iraq No, Australia invaded a country without a declaration of war or UN Support at the time. And to boot, if they do attack us through gorilla warfare then we will go and call that terroism. Err to think that we may be terrorists.

More Lies, tying the Afghan issues in with Iraq.

More and more political push for Legislative Acts which puts the political arm of government out of reach of the Law, therefore not being held accountable through law.

Err No Thanks.

Whilst I will always be proud of our Tri Force (afterall I was one), I do not wish to be proud of our recent political failures.

We have taken our military beyond the bounds of a defence force.

I am not expecting my views to be carried by all, or for that matter anyone. However, that is one great thing about this country, we can, and have the right to think for ourselves.

That I agree.

Hmmm, me thinks you misinterpreted some sentiments here Mr Weiry from myself and a few others.
I have served, and would willingly do so again.
I support our troops. But I don't think we need to be in some of the places we are, kicking sleeping dogs and stirring hornets nests.
I think the pollies talk a good game, then get other people to do the hard yards at the pointy end.
I don't like empty rhetoric or Americanisation of our culture (including rehashed emails and urban myths), anymore than I do anyone else changing our culture.
I believe in freedom of speech, religion and ideas. If someone wants to say Jesus or Allah don't exist or they were gay, or the holocaust didnt happen or Mrs Thatcher was a good person or whatever- they are entitled to. They are completely F*&%(^ stupid obviously, but they are entitled to say those things.

I'm all for being Neutral as well, but 'naturel' I'm not big on - If the bad guys come over the hill, I want to be clothed when they arrive.

Don't go hard on Vlad either, he protects our country everyday from bad apples (and bananas and fruit loaf) and drug lords - even if he has to peer into 'black holes' to do it :wasntme: (sorry Vlad)

What may I ask is "people like us". South Australians? Soldiers? Forum members?

Let's get back to Land Rovering B4 this degenerates into the "terrorism" thread that got everyone hot under the collar a few months back.

I love youse all:D

Margaret Thatcher is/was the Land Rover Defender of Prime Ministers.

Not that I mean to start or escalate a flame war or anything:angel: . It's just that when I read stuff from one particular side of politics on this site I want to wave a flag to let you all know that there are all shapes and sizes and opinions here. I revere Thatcher (and Reagan), I admire Bush and I LOVE Little Johnny. Not trying to convert anyone, just sayin'.

Oh and yes Ive been called "completely F*&%(^ stupid " many times before and often they've been right.

I have mixed feelings on some of these issues. I DO fully support our troops wherever when ever they serve. I do not how ever support a lot of the reasons they are there (e.g. middle east is all about oil, nothing more, with terrorism etc an excuse). At the end of the day that is their job and what they are paid and trained to do (not really any different to police, federal police or UN workers). Too many use the forces of a training ground with no real intention of serving in a conflict, which is just stupid. If you enlist in any of the forces you should expect to see active duty.
All my thoughts are with the guy,s serving OS and I know you miss your families and country.

Thatcher was "on the nose", highly unpopular, and gone except for a very timely little war that she took all the credit for winning and went to the general election wrapped in and surrounded by a sea of Union Jacks and cheering jingoistic poms. Of course the returning servicemen were cheered and hailed as heroes, and then forgotten and treated like a piece of dog s--t.

I started this thread because I was e-mailed something that I thought shows a "nice" feeling ie whats on the news at the moment, once again I appologise for it also being re-worded in to 3 other different but sounding the same "storys" I was never aware of the "others" it was never threaded to start political, I don't like him/her, or I support the soldiers but don't like this or that.
Once again it was not threaded to upset anyone or start anything.

Don't stress mate, I'm not. Threads have more directions than a Referdex, ask TOmbraider. All he did was show us his tat, and that went through Freemasons v Celts, Egyptians, judgements on tats, piercings, etc., Catholicism and the value of life - Sith's sexual preferences with yoghurt eating truck drivers. etc etc:D

Which reminds me of the interesting conundrum that the Aussie government is now facing. They aren;t recruiting as many new recruits as they would like because there's just not the interest from young people. They spin this as:

1. They are so good at providing employment that all these young people already have jobs, and/or
2. People don't want to join because they don;t want to do any actual fighting.

The first is rubbish, the 2nd probably has some truth but I reckon the true reason is that people have woken up to the fact that in the long term (and sometimes even the short one) the government treats ex-servicement like discarded rubbish !
