In my short time on this forum I've discovered some topics rapidly become discussion about Moderators, appropriate posts, tolerance and other blood-pressure-raising topics. For some reason they appear to be related to freshwater crayfish.
I'm wondering if there's a place for a forum that sits between "rants" and the "mudpit" for this sort of topic? For a start, I'd nominate this very post for it!
So... moderators and others - what do you think?
As an option, all topics started by certain handles could be automatically posted there.

Perhaps a beer batter's better? Than tea, I mean. With prawns or Yabbies.

I thought that was what the mudpit was originaly implemented for ,a place to go and sling off at whoever or whatever without mod interference, but it seems that certain people cant keep it confined to there for whatever reason being, maybe the lack of attention from others that choose not to go there, the fact that many people over the life of this great site have commented on the lack of such "C"rap that is abundant on many other such forums that they have left them to come here and the other fact that a number have gone "awol" since such "stuff" became more common place in here, please at all times remember that this is a family site, and as such young people (kids of site members and passers by) do occasionally frequent the pages of here,so if its a rant you want take it to the rant section,if you want to sling off at something or talk absolute c-rap take it to the pit and keep it there
rant over
please note ,these are my opinions only and not necesarilly the same as site management, Ferno

I echo Fernos comments having been the referee on too many occasions.
If you like the mud to stick then go to the pit. Too easy.

Thanks Mods, nice to see you having your moments of ranting as well. I think the difficulty comes from the fine line between jokes and mudpit material. I think the crustacean in question, and possible some others though less dramatically, feels a need for a wider audience to stir but sometimes this ends in conflict and not always with the initiator of the thread.
I don't know how other people access the forums - I always access through the "New Posts" search. Either that or the home page gives you the recent posts regardless of the forum they're in.
Having a designated section for pungent posts that don't require the mud pit is a serious suggestion on my part. General chat seems to aim for a PG or lower rating, Mudpit from my uniformed perspective seems to go for MA to R. Perhaps a 13+ section? It could be the jokes forum, the rant section, whatever, I don't care. The main thing is some sort of flag to stop the sensitive diving in (I would have thought the author of the thread would have been enough warning by now) and a clear line for the Moderators.
I appreciate the "moderation in all things, even moderation" approach, especially as it applies to Moderation. I think the balance is well kept. I think the boundaries are clear enough and don't need to be tested. I just wonder I there needs to be somewhere for the dogs to run a little without being, well, a Mudpit. And please, this is colourful talking only. I don't want anyone getting offended at references to canines, crustaceans or any other species, even homo sapiens.
So, as a compromise, I propose what's in the post title. The section can continue to have "boiling over" elements as well as, well, stirring. Maybe even shellfish. It clarifies that it's just opinion. The summary can continue to refer to rants etc.

Your continued reference to me clearly defines this as a personal attack continuance of such an attack will not be tollerated.
You obviously have a hidden agenda, one of which I doubt you would express in person, face to face.
You limited post count obviously shows you are a man of little words, nows not the time to speak up.

I've already PMed, Yabbie. I'd say everything I've said here in person, only you'd be able to hear the tone of voice. No offense intended, mate.
My limited post count reflects that fact that I joined recently. I've not done as well as Ace, but I've not been backward with my opinions - as this thread indicates.
I appreciate your humour and your input, just don't want to see slanging matches, which are rarely your fault either but seem to cluster around your threads because of their robust nature - people's emotions get raised, which is not a bad thing unless it breaks out in shouting.
Again, no offense intended.

One of the great things about this place are the colourful characters who inhabit it...sure on occasions things are a little testy...but we need to let things flow without too many compartments.
Moderators are boundary riders only. Many compartments means much moderation...the moderators would like to enjoy being part of the place as well.
Yabbies words and his quote are an apt reminder of the basic principals of conduct.
And well responded Scrambler :)
nuff said and carry on....I for one was enjoying the thread

Golly gee, Batman. Look, just had a little thought, along the lines that some people seem to get a little on their high horses with certain posts, demanding they get moved to to the mud pit. Moderators have to rush in, settling everyones nerves down. I just thought there might be some way to clarify that it's all just fun, that no-one should be threatening anyone's cat over a joke, without the moderators having to run in. Now I can at least use my own name as an example of a thread that needed a moderator to step in and calm things down, so I shouldn't be accused of any ulterior motives. Unless that WAS the ulterior motive?
Yabbie, OI, sorry it sailed that close to the wind, but the aim was to help. Not a sacking offense, I don't think. Not even close, given what I've read her already.

it's pretty simple really. If you aren't sure if it's ok in the general forum, it goes in the mudpit. Simple as that really.
By all means, go ahead and start a yabbie or boiling pot thread in there, however there isn't going to be any extra area for it. For now, I think that's enough on this here. As already pointed out, personal attacks won't be tolreated in here. Play nice, or play elsewhere (or in the mudpit).
Yabbie and scrambler have sorted out their differences via PM, and as far as i'm concerned, this thread has run it's course.
This thread is now locked.
