What is the mechanism in a AWD that stops the front or back wheel spinning faster than the other? How does it Work?
walker
28th September 2006, 06:05 PM
That would be a centre diff lock. Normally the centre diff allows the front wheels to spin at a different rate the the back the same way you acle diff do.
No idea how it wrks exactly but the gears are locked together.:D

CDL and/or Traction control on Land Rovers other manufactorers have used other methods though.

A normal differential is designed to alow one wheel on an axle to spin faster than the other - this is to allow cars/vehicles to turn corners without scuffing tyres.
Just think when turning a corner the inside wheel will need to turn slower than the outside wheel - it's the way a normal diff is designed.
It works due to the different ratio and cog size of the gear cogs in the diff (an over simplfied explanation) there will be others on here who will put it somewhat better that I can.
...............but I must ask - why do you want to know.
Limited slip diffs reduce the amount of difference in speed between the two wheels. a diff lock eliminated any difference and should not really be used on the roads.

What is the mechanism in a AWD that stops the front or back wheel spinning faster than the other? How does it Work?
various means can be used to reduce front to rear slip when a centre differential is utilised, either by mechanical, hydraulic, elctro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic trickery.
I suggest you go here (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm) to learn how a differential works, then check out further pages to learn how some of the devices used to limit wheelspin operate. With all the petty pictures and diagrams, it will be explained far better than I can achieve.

2) Why is a Pink Panther Pink?

my guesses
1. the last 2 can be recycled into the first one..
(ok seriously) all were born of necessity out of WW2 made from leftover parts of other war stock supplies
2. The pink panther is a cartoon character and is pink because someone washed the artists coloured pens with the white ones.
(Ok seriously) The pink panther is the old equivilent of the new LRPV. it was intended for desert use and the pink colour was picked for its close contrast to the desert sands.
just guessing

Actually, the bits n pieces slant I get re Landrovers and Spam, but what's the link with the Spit?
The story I heard was that during the war aluminium pots and pans were offered up by the population for the war effort and Spitfire manufacture. At the end of hostilities there was a shirt load available for the use of...also the green paint once used to paint aircraft was cheap.

1)
Spitfires were made out of recycled metal (only stuff they could get) Rations included tins of SPAM. The empty tin cans had to be returned to get more rations, these tins where melted down and used for munitions, and aircraft parts, Spitfire aircraft parts.
And we all know what happened to the leftover and scrap Spitfire and other Aircraft parts after the war.

During WW2 the RAF were testing prototype Aircraft to counter the Lauftwaffe's best efforts. They had the test flight aircraft in offshore bases and painted everything including wheels up in easily visable colours (PINK) (ORANGE) etc so the brass could spot them from the ground. One of these plains crashed and vanished. Years later, it was found purely by accident. The pink colour had masked into the background so much the people who found it could only just make it out less than a coupleof hundred feet away.
When the British Defence department found this out they instantly started experimenting with the colour, the land rover seen above in this thread is the result

Well Harry if you want to learn as well you could start with the link above.
However if you read the post it was not a question but a statement leading to the location of some of the real questions.
To answer the question of
How long did it take to make a series 1?
The answer varies between 4 days to 2 weeks dependant on materials, and model variant. The reason behind each panel on every car was fabricated and assembled by hand. This is why there are various differences in the amounts of rivetts holding the panels together.

Yup ! I know where Portland is, it ain't no fun riding a Vintage Motorcycle through there late at night, on the way to Bathurst at Easter, the fumes from the cement works don't do the eyes a lot of good:eek: :(.
Here's some answers to the Landrover Questions, some of the others may also learn something as well.
The Landrover Factory at Solihull was a (WW2)"Shadow" Lancaster heavy bomber factory, after the war (World War 2) when the Rover company wanted to resume civilian production the total allocation of Steel for the company was 5.000 Tons Adv.:o for Production and Tool making, there was no limit on the amount of Aluminium that could be purchased, so as a "stop Gap" vehicle a 4x4 utility vehicle for farmers use was designed and built, the minimum of steel was used, 4 flat sheets, edge welded, and the rest made from Aliminium, including the Firewall (Bulkhead) the mechanicals came from the Pre-War car lines, including the "Free-Wheel" device, the first "80inch" vehicles were constant 4x4 ;) this was dropped for selectable 4x4, the first prototype was Centre Steer, but ALL Production vehicles were handed, RHD/LHD, the display vehicle at the 1948 Amsterdam motor show was built on a Willy's Jeep Chassis:eek: (80 inch) the front bumper of the first 500 was built as part of the Chassis;) the colour of the first vehicles was light green "RAF Cockpit Green No3" :D :)
The "Land-Rover" was originally only a "Stop-Gap" vehicle until the Steel restrictions were lifted, it became so successfull it was selling at a rate of 10-1 of the other Rover products in 1951.:D

G'day Vandermorph:)
Last time that I went past the cement works was on the way to Bathurst 87 :) but I had travelled down from Qld for that borrowed a bike from a friend BMW R75/5, but while I lived in NSW, I never missed a Bathurst from 1969-1982, Riots and all  :nazilock: gave up riding with a group when the shooting started :o had a family then, and it wasn't worth the hassle, lets just say that I spent a lot of years at Bathurst Easter Motorcycle Races under the influence of alcohol ;) (Even saw the races a couple of times):D AND many happy hours at the O'connel Pub, (older locals will remember that) that group of gents used to drink it dry every year:eek:
