Unfortunately the MINI is just not doing the trick for us as a second car. So, we're going to sell it :(   The plan is to buy something fairly cheap and look at getting the MINI traveller/clubman (stretch MINI) when they come out early 2008.

We were thinking about getting a renault Scenic to fill the gap. They are a bit of a orphan, but because of that they are fairly cheap. Less than 15k for a 3/4 yo one with pretty low K.

Has anyone got any experience with these?

No actual experience, but looked at them as a car for my son & his family. Very impressed by the numerous different ways of configuring it, lots of stowage spots (so many you are likely to forget where you put things). Less impressed by reviews citing poor quality and reliability issues. Can't remember what these were though - ended up crossing it off the list.

That's not so good to hear. My mate had a Clio and it was a corking car. In three years it only had one minor warranty claim against it. :o I was hoping these would be similar.

Your Land Rover was built where ?

Your Lotus was built where ?

Your Mini was built where ?

And Renaults are built where ? FRANCE, that's bloody where. Get over it.

Capt.

I had one of these from new (2002) and I would rave about it.
They are an excellent car for a family, very versatile and believe it or not they can fly along.
I found the quality and reliability excellent.
The price as you said, now is excellent. I found them very reliable, incredible fuel consumption, and very reasonably priced when it came to dealer servicing and parts etc.
If it had 7 seats, I would still have it.

I take all that on board :)

It's better than buying from Japan though :O

In addition to this, I have to continue my campaign to stay on the lunatic fringe of car ownership at all costs. People will think I have sold my sole if we buy a Honda Jazz. :0

The other compelling round is I like playing the field so to speak. I've never owned more than 1 car from any brand. I'd like to add Renault to the list. :O

In order of ownership (current to beginning) the brands I have experienced are... ... .land rover...MINI...Toyota..lotus...Mazda... Ford ....nissan... mitsubishi. There are still a few brands to get through. :)

Why not get an early TD4 auto - better car for about the same money. The early problems are gone and it is still a Landrover.

In all my years in the motor trade, I learnt one good thing you can say about Fiats. They are a marginally better car than a Renault.

If a make/model of vehicle is going cheap through the trade auctions there is a good reason. Ring a few dealers and say you want to trade one in and see what sort of reception you get. This is the acid test of worth.

I must admit I'm a bit concerned about getting rid of it in a year or two

Having said that I think a lot of the problem is the original owners are as per carsales tradition asking over the top prices for them.

I believe I've found one I could own for around 13k that's very low K. At that price it's exceptional value compared to everything else on the market. I'm hoping that I could put a good price on it and shift it more quickly than everyone else.

Sorry but thats what your original post implied:eek: . Anyway we are hijacking the thread.

Interestingly, 4wd magazine ran a number of articles a couple of years ago that followed a trip where a couple of guys drove a Scenic around the world - including through Australia and it seems to have handled the trip pretty well. Don't know whether it was the "quality"of the car or the sensible driving of the drivers.

Gazzz

PS still reckon that an 01/02 TD4 would be better - ands just as reliable

We are not talking about getting rid of the defender to clear things up. The freelander would be too long for our garage and necessitate the sale of the LOTUS. Not happening :(

We went on a club run the other day in the MINI and I had my daughter screaming hysterically in the back saying "I'm stuck daddy" all the while pushing me in the back. Meanwhile I'm in the front and I can't heel and toe or get gearchanges because I'm squashed :(

Vlad, this is only an interim measure until this comes onto the market at the end of 2007 or early 2008. ;) ;) If we don't get the MINI then we will get a golf GTI or similar. My mojo couldn't handle driving this car for more than a year or two. :D :D

Seriously, the ren is a great car, fellow next to me works on them, and a friend of mine owns one, and he is very happy with it.
Comes free with a glovebox full of Escargo, especially if you leave the windows down on a winters day.....

Hi Captain!
The Renaults are very reliable these days. Friends of ours have bought their second Scenic a couple of years ago and are still happy. Other friends of ours have bought their Scenic at about the same time and experienced no probs whatsoever.
We don't have one, but we have a Fiat (see posts above) which has been more reliable than all our Landrovers...

If you are going to buy the Renault make sure it's a Diesel!

I didn't know we could get the diesel Renaults here

At risk of getting banned or put in the stock and dead tomatoes thrown at my person, I'd get a Honda Jazz in the 3 mode Auto or a Civic.

Why wont the family fit in a Mini?

If you can put up with the lack of room for the first 12months (give her the Landy to drive during this time) then you won't need half the stuff to cart around for the baby then the Mini shouldn't be an issue

Firstly, you're right, there aren't any diesel Scenics. :(

Yes, you're right on the gear. The problem seems to be that I'm tall, and need a fair bit of seat travel to be comfortable. The car seats are actually the problem. With two in car seats feeding them in and out through the front doors (2 door only) is quite a hassle. It was ok with one but two isn't working.

There is a 4 door MINI coming in 2008 that is a little longer. That should be a good second car for us.

We got good Money for our MINI too (it goes Tuesday) so we were just going to get something as a stopgap.

I owned a Scenic back in the UK, and bought one as a second car, as it won European car of the year when it was launched. I had the 1.6, but I regretted not getting the 2.0, as it was slightly underpowered. However, it was a very reliable car, and the seating is very flexible. Take em out, stick em in, swap em round. ecomomy was excellent, and it was very practical. 2 years and never had a single issue with it....

The RX is not really a capable vehicle for poff road purposes, but it does look good....

My parents had a RX but had to get rid of it as they split up, I begged and pleaded for it but was told "NO".
All I can say is I loved it, plenty of room, smooth to drive, ran on the smell of a oily rag.
In the 3 bit years they had it they never had a problem with it, but then again my old men wouldn't let you let the windows down as you would scratch the window tint....how he figured that I don't know.
Anyway if I had that kind of choice I would get one.;)
I found it funny when they first came out and they did reviews on it, and went on how bad a 4x4 they were compared to other ones, when the ****heads should have known that they were only a all wheel drive just like a Subaru, anyway any excuse to **** on the French I guess.

Actually... they're NOT an all-wheel drive. The rear only has power if the front slips. That's why they got bagged - they lacked the angles for off-road on hard surfaces and you had to bog the front before the rear got power so no good on sand either.

Looked seriously at them 4 years ago, and bought a Subaru Forester. Foresters are a little short in the rear seat legroom so got kicks in the back.

Speaking of which, for rear seat leg room, keeping your fleet all in British and having some (strange) street-cred, what about an Austin 1800? The old Land Crab has plenty of rear seat leg room and 4 doors.

I gathered you wanted a little more interior space?

Compared to a Land Rover everything is a cracking drive, but compared to a MINI?

Perhaps a Maserati Quatroporte would give you the performance and the space you're looking for? But, unfortunately, a little long for the garage.

A fiesta AND a scenic or just one of ?

No no... one or the other.

See, the car just has to be big enough to do the shopping run. Mum, two kids, a pram and the shopping. 4 doors is a big thing. Anything where we need more space we have the defender for.

I'm trying to get something that we can sell in a couple of years and not take a bath on. I've found this fiesta ghia that has gone from a 25k car to a 15k car in not two years with only 17k on it

Even if we buy it and own it for 2 years I reckon it will only have 30k on it, and we should still get 12-13 for it. :)

On the positive side the fiesta has "class benckmark" dynamics according to wheels.

We drove the scenic on Saturday. It was nice :) However I could hustle the fender around more quickly. At one point we were taking off from the lights and not really doing anything too much and I looked at the saleman with horror and said "that's flat"

My friends have started asking me "what car is it this 24 hours" LOL.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it earlier but the MINI went to a 20 yo kid still on his learners last night :o   He did seem like a nice kid though :)

Excellent point. I'll pass that onto the wife ;)

We were pretty impressed with how well the thing drove. And it's cheap! :)

I'm sure you're right on the mistake front, but the bloodlines are 1000 -> 1200 -> 120Y -> Sunny and 1600 -> 180B -> 200B -> Bluebird. Y

Well... the decision is made.

We bought the fiesta because it was cheap... a good car... and drove fantastically :)

It drove just like a cooper at half the price! :)

Plus, I didn't trust the focus SA build quality. Very average :(

Well, here is Uncle Festa :o

He's 2 years old with 17k on him. Paid about 15k. He is the ghia so has a bit more kit then usual. It was the only car on our drive list that I wanted to take for a flog over the mountains so got the vote!
