Homebrew for me:D i can create any flavour i want and improve some beers, except VB or Fosters  only replacing it improves those beers.

Then Guinness, Tooheys old, Tooths/Kent/Hunter old, Tassie Beers and Coopers.

Just availability of what ever is the beer that's easiest to aquire from the above.

I refuse to drink anything from Carlton & United unless there is nothing else and I don't have to pay for it. My late father-in-law was wont to refer to any C&U product as "Surfside Sex", f---ing near water. After a six months work stint in Dandenong some years ago, I realised that there were four things wrong with Melbourne, the weather, the football, the Victorians, and Carlton beer. I currently drink these beers:-
Home Brew, various styles. Usually a Coopers kit.
Tooheys New
Fourex heavy
Carlsberg Elefant (Made in Denmark)
Schwelmer Pils (German)

As a matter of interest to beer drinkers, the Carlsberg & Tuborg beers made in Melbourne are quite different in colour, taste, and texture, to the real thing.

I prefer Bourbon.
I usually have beer in the fridge but am not a huge beer drinker. Crownies are usually in the fridge, more for the father in law and friends. Other beers that frequent my palate are Hahn Light, Cascade light, Coopers Pale, Heineken, Grolsch and Millers. When in SA West End XXXX is OK. Used to drink Swan Gold mostly until they discontinued it, suicide for the Swan Brewery, have not drank Swan since. Powers used to be OK as well, do not know if they still make it, as was Eagle Blue.
Those green cans are horrid, no wonder the Vic's are Bitter.
Then there is the totally awfull Southwark that my grandfather used to drink. Im sure it was just Murray River water and urine.

Have to agree here, Tasmania does the best beer from this part of the world. Boags and Cascade are far superior to some of the Aussie stuff. Nothing like an afternoon on the Cascade lights:D

And firmly agree with this man too:D When it's time to get a bit loose, a few pints of the black stuff is definitely the drink of choice. Like my porter as well but not such a big fan of the guiness porter.........will finish you off mind you:eek:

Also a fan of the "Red Death" or McEwans Export from Scotland but again, makes you do funny things if you have too much of it:eek: :D

I used to drink beer - until I moved to SA in 1969. Then I was introduced to Southwark, Coopers, and West End. I gave up drinking beer - that stuff was (and probably still is) undrinkable.

But I found out about wine! :)

Oh, when I was in Darwin recently, I thought I'd have an imported beer with lunch. So I ordered a Stella Artois. I looked at the bottle (after I'd started drinking it) and found it was made in by Carlton United in Melb. But the restaurant still insisted on charging imported prices for alocal beer.

Thats when you can find it on the Eastern coast. When I see it I grap a case cause it's hard to get. What is the name of the pub in Freemantle that sells it? I remember the big picture of the Prime ministers over the staircase, I remember drinking a few on a balcony of the pub, next thing I know we're in the car with a few cases.

A LOT of the "imported' beers are brewed here now, and they aren't as good as the originals, and still as expensive.

Aren't they still classed as Australian.

It's interesting to see that Tasmania differs itself from Australia on the subject of beer but will still try and classify themselves as Australian on any other subject.

Isn't the Guinness in Aus brewed in Tassie as well? I never looked that close at the can's (If I have to drink it from a wiggetted tin much prefer it on tap) besides I'm too busy drinking it's goodness to care where it's brewed.

Tassie is overseas  (Just stirring the pot)

The Guinness "extra" or "special" or "export" is brewed here and everywhere. Tis in the smaller can with the yellow oval label, or the tallies, or stubbies.
The Draught (big can or 330ml bottle with the widget) is from OS

All this talk of beer reminds me that when I lived in WA for a cuppla years, I was a keen Redback drinker, and still grab a 6 pack every now and then, and also I think it was Swan Draught. But some of the best beer I ever had was some brewery heading south, was on a big property, had all sorts of their own labelled beer, excellent stuff. One was like a burnt bitter and about 7%, cuppla those ann everyone looked good  . IF any of you WAULROIANS know of the place, please let me know, would love to know if they ever started to sell to bottle shops,

I drink what's on special usually within reason. I used to drink XXXX all the time but the price has risen past the $30 mark, I would rather pay more for something better.

I drink Carlton Draught or Carlton Cold these days. Boags are bloody nice as well as Cascade, not a Tooheys fan although I would drink it if I was desperate.

What happened to all the old $20 specials (well maybe that was a while ago)

You know the stuff that tasted like horse p* drained thru a football sock.

Brisbane Bitter (i.e. Brisbane River)
Melbourne bitter
XXXX Draught
Big Red
Export Lager

Although Dan Murphy (hmmm Dan's), always has Amsterdam (a cheaper Heineken) for $30 a case. Its not a bad drop actually. They often have specials where you get a case for nicks with a case of whatever red or white they have on special.

Hi Guys
Homebrew is the go.Ive got a keg system, run 4x18lt kegs(2 cartons in a keg) seem to do a keg a week(with help),running the 4 kegs ages the beer nicely. My favorites are Coopers Australian Pale Ale,Coopers Mexican Cerveza(Corona) and Coopers Bitter.Occasionally do a full on stout or too during winter.
We drink more than our fair share of Swan Draught after work, quite a nice drop isnt it Sly:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Will be looking into a homebrew equivalent.

Coming from the land of Tetleys (not tea!) and John Smiths I found some of the more common brews a bit tasteless but saying that I'm hooked on a good CUB Draught straight from the tap and have recently fallen for Coopers Sparkling Ale, if that's the 5.9% one with a red label. Yummy:D

I will agree with the cider comment. Whenever I'm on the ferry when I get the chance to go down and visit, I spend the night on the cider. It's fairly cheap (which is a bonus) and I really don't remember much of the trips I have done on the boat. Although some stories should never be told in public! :wasntme:

Best Australian Beer, VB & Coopers Sparkling Ale, very closely followed by Crown.

Grolsch, my great grandad always had a couple of cases of swing tops ,cold in the cellar, excellent!!. Otherwise Cascade Premium, or if going bush, any decent brew, in cans, thats cold, is the best. A man under pressure needs a refresher!!!!.:D

well dirtydawg used me as the reason for this thread.
at least we all have an opinion on this very important subject.
it doesn't matter what you prefer, we are all winners here.
i actually find all beers good, well all beer is better than water [unless we happen to be stuck without water.]
now to join in to the preference bit,
crown,
coopers pale ale, [thats the green label]
boags,
stout, stout, bring back abbotts!
and nothing imported,
except - guinness, leffe, stella.
american beer is 'lite ale' and does not comply with the rules for 'beer'
and if you have to put lemon slices into your beer, it isn't beer, its a trendy way of selling crap to poofters, so that mexican **** , isn't beer, its wee.
unfortunatly, i have grown out of my love for four x, which i had as a kid,
seems that when i finally grew up and was'nt able to pinch it from dad's pallet, it has a different taste, but don't all of us have a change of pallete as we grow older?.
i don't like home brew, although i have tried many and made a bit myself, and they are good to drink, i will not drink them now.
so lets enjoy our beer and have a good time.
for legal reasons - include 'in moderation'

Anything from Coopers is bloody good, but now that they are a high volume national brand why is Coopers so expensive?

Because the family figured that it is a bloody good beer, so why drop the price, when people continue to pay for it. Keeps the share holders happy as well.

wrong mr crow eater..go to the back of the class...:D:D
Pale ale is a nice drop though

Humbug,

East / West - both are skewed of centre.

H'mmm, not sure about the beer being national yet. I struggled to get a drop in many a town. Things are getting better though. Once upon a time I had to overload the trailer, now though, I can manage with a reasonable level of redundancy.

I want to brew my own, but the ball and chain says it will just encourage me:mad:
I also reckon that I would stuff up more batches than not.:(
Someone should set up a market place trading in homebrew. I happily drink others creations:D
