They are 49 pounds each plus postage and packing. But trying to get them cheaper

I'm interested, depending on price.
Are you thinking of being their Australian agent, or getting a once off purchase?
Given our poor exchange rate, I think they should do the colonies a favour and include the Land Rover badge on the top left corner for FREE ;)
Keep us posted.

I love seeing the various ways people tinker with their dash layouts - maight start a new thread for showing pix of dash mods.
One thing bugs me though... why the f*** can't people line up their switch-gear straight! I see this everywhere - particularly with locker switches. All just a little bit too wiggly - grrr.:nazilock:

The more I think about it the more I like it. I had a google look at the "Iron Goat" centre dash, which isn't as good and is about 2-3 times as expensive (depending on where you source it). This dash would let me mount the CD player lower on the horizontal plane, which is much better for reducing skip than the 45deg angle it now sits on. There may even be enough space for a screen for a reverse camera! I was looking for a pod to mount an extra 3 gauges and contemplated tidying up the switch set up from the previous owner. I want one!
Please please please get them at a cheap price.

They fit a 200 Tdi no worries . After all that is what they are for. Designed to give more places for switches and stuff. Copy of the TD5 02 dash But with out the cost of a gen one.
This is a pic of the gen dash i put in my winch challenge 200 TDi 90. The only probelm with the gen one is you have to use the hole and switches that land rover surply

mmmm answer two question in one.
Made in the UK and therefore no real thought about A/c as there are not many defenders with A/C in the UK
Ok just done a bit of research If you have the under A/C like below then no problems. If you have the (as i call it ) the troff dash filled vents . Then i would say no. But as i have never own a defender with that sort of A/C (infact i have never owned a defender with A/C at all) i don't know what is behind it

29th October 2006, 03:54 PM
being UK made great stuff
yep not many pre Td5 Def 's sent to Aus had factory air and were fitted in Aus with Aus units hence this odd fitment which would mean that the pod might interfere with the vent on the left of steering wheel and won't fit with the metal angle without taking to it with a hacksaw
915
.... and that's a damn pity cos I want one:mad:

Ok here are the details
This is the email sent to me about the prices. Sorry for the delay.
To ship 1 x dash to Aus via Royal Mail would be £24.00. This wonderful British service promises at best, to get there when it gets there!
To ship 5 x dash to Aus via Fedex would be £96.00. Fedex normally work on approx 3-4 working days and are reliable.
This works out at £19.20 each. The more you order, the price of shipping per unit comes down.
I'm willing to extend the 10% discount offer to the total quantity of consoles ordered.
We send quite a lot of our 'world famous' seat rails to Australia. These are a heavy item so shipping is a real killer. It may be worth asking around in case you or anyone else wants to organise a similar group-buy to cut down on shipping costs. Again, we could do a 10% discount for quantity.
Like we discussed, the shape of the Td5 and Tdi dash trays are slightly different so we'd need to know on the order which model of Defender the console was to be fitted into. We are currently awaiting new stock of the Td5 mounting frames, but we expect these to be with us anytime now.

Don't knock Royal Mail... I can get stuff from the UK to remote NT faster than I can from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane by AusPost!
I've been following this thread with interest. Is there any confirmation on the Defender 300Tdi A/C and whether it interferes with the console?

If you are going to get them then awesome - definitely put me down for a black one for a 300tdi. The deposit if required is ready as soon as you say so. In fact the whole payment is waving in the breeze ready to go ...
However if you have gone cold on this then perhaps the rest of us should get our collective acts together and import some of these direct through the forum?
1. can you give us an idea if you are still there and doing this Reads and
2. if Reads has gone walkabout we should start to work out our contingency plan

I will let folks know what I hear back when I hear it. I have asked for quotes for 5, 10, 20. I have asked them to include postage for these quantities as a seperate item.
The other thing that we never worked out is how are we gonna get these things out to those who want them. It would be very cool if anyone onhere that owns a parts business or something would be prepared to have the baton passed to them ...

I'm still interested in one but I'm still not convinced that it will fit 300 Tdi's with air con so I've sent these photos to mudstuff for their opinion so when I hear from them I'll let people know.
My concerns are that some of the photos we have show that the pod has a lip on it that fits under the facia (see photo) and that the Aussie fitted air con screws to the front of the facia so without some modification eg removal of lip or cutting or sliding behind the air con bracket it won't fit
what are others opinions?
However! there are photos of the pod that seems not to have the lip so maybe the design has been changed

speaking of such how hard is it to remove said radio mount :D
Easy
It sits under the top black bit and then 2 screws hold it to the back. The just pulls out
So take you stearo out and then undo the two screws and you should be able to just twist and pull it out from the black top of the dash

Ok
Going by royal Mail to here would be the best and cheapest. Get stuff from my brother all the time and only takes a week.
Price
Ok postage each $62 mmm but becomes cheaper the more we get sent over Ie $62 for one but 2 will be the same priceish to post
They are $125 each but looking like we will get them for $112. But more and that may come down.
Will speak to him tonight as i want to know if that includes the dreded and if so in the Uk tonys share is 17.5 % and as they are going out side of the country they should not be subject to that (but i am new to this so don't really know:) ) We may have to pay Johns share but that would be less as it is only 10%
The other option is to ask a mate to ship them over and then there will be no postage cost but could be longer as they will come by container with Bearmach parts.
The 200,300tdi's and all the other engine options of the time are the same it is just the TD5 which are differant. Their bottom try (which i call the trough) is not as deep on the TDi's

No VAT on international orders. If the value of a parcel is over $1000 when landing in Australia Customs will hit you with an excise/tax, meaning all would have to be posted individually.

AU$1000 is approx GBP400 which is approx 8 units @ GBP49 each so we're close to looking at 2 parcels. I think the savings in freight would be worth it still.

I am in Sydney.
I have family in UK and will be there for a weekend in March if that helps. I too would wait for free shipping.
Should not need to pay the VAT and Johnies bit is only 10% Other duties depend on what you call them. The 1000 dollar threshold is not hard and fast. i got hit for 65% on some used clothing from USA price paid for item 68USD once duty freight and GST paid made them more than could buy here!
Car parts have a set rate but maybe plastic formings could be duty rated at 0%

I'm still interested in one but I'm still not convinced that it will fit 300 Tdi's with air con so I've sent these photos to mudstuff for their opinion so when I hear from them I'll let people know.
My concerns are that some of the photos we have show that the pod has a lip on it that fits under the facia (see photo) and that the Aussie fitted air con screws to the front of the facia so without some modification eg removal of lip or cutting or sliding behind the air con bracket it won't fit
what are others opinions?
However! there are photos of the pod that seems not to have the lip so maybe the design has been changed
I have one of these (brought it back with me from the UK last month), and yes Dave, you are quite correct. The console will not fit with our Australian spec A/C in place without some modification. The lip under the pod will need to be cut off as you suggest. Having said that, it's only plastic so a few minutes with a hacksaw should sort it out.

OK, here's the slight problem. The bottom lip on the pod will need removing to fit with Aus spec A/C units.

Shouldn't be a major job to cut it down, but there's no way it'll fit as it is.

repy back from Mud
There is only one console design. However, there are two different fitting kits that takes into account the different dash designs of Td5 models and earlier vehicles.
I sent a reply the other day to Cameron Little from the forum explaining we were looking into the air-con compatibility issue. Tdi Defenders with air-con have to my knowledge never been sold in the UK so in the absence of a donor vehicle on which to try a console, we can't say 100% for sure that the console will fit. Your own air-con for example is fitted in a style that is different to the Td5 models and certainly not something I have never seen in the UK. We have however previously supplied plenty of consoles to the USA, Australia and South Africa where air-con fitment is common and so-far, I can report we've not had a single piece of negative feedback from any customer to say they've had problems fitting the unit.
The bottom of the console is fixed by attaching screws up into the bottom of the dash. As you've correctly figured this will be difficult with the air-con unit fitted. Since Cameron's initial enquiry raised the air-con issue for the very first time, we've already introduced a couple of changes to the fitting kit that should make life easier if you've air-con fitted. Up until now, the console has been secured with two screws in the end plates (the screw you can see above the mic in the pic) and two more screws into the bottom of the dash. We have now added a further screw hole to each end plate so that the console can now be secured using four screws into the main mounting frame. We reckon the lip at the bottom of the console should tuck down between the top of the air-con unit and the dash, however you may need to trim a piece a piece off the air-con edging trim in order for the console to fit snugly against the dash. This will be easy once you've cut the section of dash away immediately above it. On Td5 models the bottom of the console should just slide down over the rubber edging strip attached to the top of the air-con housing.
The pic I have attached illustrates how much of the dash tray needs to be cut away.
The critical dimensions of the console are:
Overall width: 355mm
Central recess: W 190mm, H 126mm
Upper recess: W 190mm, H 58mm
As you can see from Paul a fitting problem with the Aussie fitted air con that hopefully can be solved and Mud has added more fitting points.
Paul will there be interference with the air con vent?

OK guys here it is ...
They have decided to offer us a 'special deal' and hold it open for us until the end of Feb.
Here is email I got from them (it contains two emails as I didn't get the first one so Kevin resent):
"Just been checking your forum and it's become apparent you obviously never got the messages I sent you last week. Apologies for the delay, but it would appear the problems we thought we'd sorted with our email are not as sorted as we'd hoped! FYI all of the consoles are black.
Here it is again below:
I've attached a couple of pics of our latest product that some of you guys may be interested in. The MudPod sits on top of the dash and mounts using a plate that uses the Defender ashtray. The hole vacated by the ashtray provides a route for wiring etc into the back of the pod. We hope to have these available at the end of the month. It measures the same width as the Console aand is made from the same material so compliments the console perfectly.
Cameron
We've been following the thread on the forum with interest and have been giving the discount offer a lot of thought. To save hassle all round, not least for the person responsible for handling the orders, monies, customs duties and local distribution and putting up with the inevitable whinging, we've worked you out 'a deal' based on an individual console shipped door-to-door.
Cost of a MUD console, with a LR badge including the shipping from the UK direct to each individual customer's address anywhere in Australia will be £65.00GBP
Two consoles = 2 x £65.00 = £130.00GBP
Customers can call us direct or pay via Paypal making payment to sales @mudstuff.co.uk
We'll run the offer throughout February. Just quote the forum offer when ordering.
All we need to know is whether the Console is for a Td5 or an earlier model. We usually refer to the two different fitting kits as Td5 or Tdi.
I hope this meets with your approval.
Please feel free to post this info on the forum."
I reckon the MUDpod looks pretty cool too but so if you want to see the 2 photos they sent me can someone tell me **off line** how to post them up?!

Sounds good, just a note £65 is approx AU$163
The original price we saw on the forum was £49 + postage. It's not unusual for postage to be £16 but I was hoping for something a bit less (it's a rather bulky item) and I think it would be a damed site easier on everyone if we order these direct.
I for one could be hit for another AU$30 postage for someone to send the item to me within Australia. So if I got it for AU$123 (£49) + AU$30 = $153 + UK Postage, so I'm in front anyway.

OK now I'm confused
So they have 2 different units but don't mention this top of the dash one on their website.
The only issue I see with this unit is that with a radio in place on the Tdi Defender there is almost no extra cable room down the back of the dash. So where do you run any wires etc. I think if you went for this unit you would also need the Console one as well.

Looking at the design I think you'd only be able to fit one or t'other.
While that new one looks pretty good, the full console one looks to be more versatile.

And if you were seriously putting a lot of stuff in there you would probably need both. Like I said, can't see how you would be able to wire from the top pod with the radio unit below it unless you already had the console unit installed. There's just not enough space for all the wiring.

All of the prices that have been listed so far are for the MUDConsole - the one that goes on the front.
The MUDPod - the one that goes on the top - will incur additional costs. Obviously an additional purchase cost plus something towards postage.
The questions I have posted to Kevin from MUD are whether there is a special package deal they can offer if members from AULRO buy both. At this stage we don't have a cost for JUST the Pod (incl. postage to Australia) so people can't at the moment make an informed decision of which one they might prefer to buy or whether they would in fact want to buy both if, as they say, 'the price is right'.
I would imagine that both could be loaded together into basically the same size box so an incentive bonus to us overseas buyers who have to pay some much for postage on top of a crap exchange rate might be that we might get free postage for the Pod if we were also buying the Console.
Just a few ideas - maybe someone out there might agree or have different, better ideas? Would love to hear them and we should keep in mind that MUD have offered us this deal for February. Today is the 11th Feb so the clock is ticking.

Hi guys.
Thanks for the interest shown in our products. As per the previous emails with a couple of members here, we're happy to offer you the following deal.
This post is aimed at clearing up any queries you have regarding the AULRO offer.
Console offer
Price is £65.00GBP shipped from the UK direct to your door.
This includes the matt black plastic badge.
For the console with the black and silver gloss enamel badge, the price is £67.50GBP.
MudPod offer
Price is £43.00GBP shipped from the UK direct to your door.
If wish to order both a console and a pod, simply combine the two prices for the respective units above. Owing to weight bands and maxium weights for individual packages, it DOES NOT make it cheaper to ship the two items together. Therefore, orders for both a console and a pod will ship seperately as two packages.
When you place an order, please state which LR badge you require and whether the console is for a Td5 model or earlier engine variant. We refer to the different fiting kits as simply: Td5 or Tdi.
Make your Paypal payment to sales@mudstuff.co.uk
The Pod and Console can be used together. Indeed, the two have been designed to work together and use the exact same textured (black) plastic material so that they compliment each other and the original spec Defender dash finish.
Air-Con compatibility.
Until we received the enquiry from the Aussie Forum regarding air-con fitment, we have to confess this is something we hadn't thought about since all UK Defenders with air-con are the post 2002 model with the new style dash. As far as I'm aware, air-con wasn't even offered as an option on UK spec Defenders. And if it was, I've certainly never seen one!
We have subsequently made a change to fitting kits to take into account air con fitment, however, since it would appear some of your air-con installations differ from those found on UK cars, it may be neccesary to trim the bottom edge of the console to fit around the air-con housing. I should point out that we have sold dozens of consoles to hot-climate countries all over the world and so-far I'm pleased to report that we not had a single customer query regarding problems installing the Console.
The Pod uses a mounting plate that utilises the ashtray aperture (see pics below). I can assure you there is enough spare within the area at the back of the dash for wiring. If you were trying to cram the wiring for anything mounted within the pod into the standard crappy radio console then, yes, you'll struggle for room. However, it is possible to access the area behind the plastic trim to get wires up to the hole vacated by the ashtray. As with any wiring job, it takes more time to do the job properly but the rewards are a neater and more reliable installation.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y135/KevBaldwin/129_2976.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y135/KevBaldwin/129_2979.jpg
The legs on the MudPod mounting plate sit inside the ashtray aperture and bend back to 'clamp' the base plate in position. This design means you've no need to drill any holes in the top of the dash. For those who prefer a more permanent fixing, we provide a couple of sticky pads and/or the base plate is drilled so you can screw it down into the dash.

Hi
We had an air-con equipped Td5 in our workshop yesterday and can confirm the MUD Console will work fine with the latest (factory fit) air-con dash assembly. The bottom of the console simply tucks down the top of the air-con housing.
On the earlier retro-fit (aussie spec?) air-con as per the example in the picture, the bottom edge of the console that normally fastens into the bottom of the dash, would need trimming off. With this in mind, we have now added additional fixings to the console end plates.
Hope this helps.

anyone got any good leads for VDO gauges in Sydney?
I am so flat out at work at the moment and trying to find somewhere to move house that I will probably need to get them to install any sensors etc for me as well.

Let me know and I'll drop in to read the message on their door to the new location.

This is a good deal fellas. I paid over $23 ea for these switches, plus about $10 postage from RS Components. The Poms pay an absolute fortune for these too.
Anyone not familiar with the Carling Contura II switches, they are the type used by ARB for their airlockers and compressors.

OK, finally finished my pod & console. Here's some pics:

I now have volt meter for main batt., tach and boost gauges in the top pod, with volt meter for the Aux batt., vac. for the maxi lockers and air pressure for the onboard air tanks in the centre section.

The big red light is for the low coolant alarm (together with a buzzer).
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/03/74.jpg
The bottom section shows the amount cut off to fit with Aus spec A/C. I also made a couple of small brackets out of gavl sheet and used the existing screws in the fascia of the A/C. This gave me something to screw the bottom of the console to.

EGT gauge and a new mechanical temp gauge sit in the factory dash, with the fuel gauge moved over to the far right.

No, if you're no putting anything "Deep" in the centre, I reckon you could get away without cutting the original dash.
For anyone about to do this, a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade was the quickest, least messy way of cutting the old dash up.

There's plenty of room to run extra wires up through where the existing wires go. To get them up to the pod on top of the dash, you can pass them behind the louvre panel thing and out where the ashtray was. ...much easier done than said...

Rather than creat a new "dash thread" I thought I'd tack my question on to this one.
I'm looking to build (have a go) at building a custom dash for my TD5 2001 Defender.
Behind the center dash there are two metal brackets. one either side of the dash running front to back and look to be pop rivited in place top and bottom.
Can anyone tell me if thise are structural or can I ust remove them without replacing.
Or do I need to make up (incorporate) supporting brackest in my design?
thanks for any advise /suggestions.

Hi scott oz,
Can't really answer your question, I've done a little mod you see on the picture without removing/damaging original structure. I'd suggest to incorporate supporting brackets if you can, or even change design to do it. Can't help more not knowing your idea

Center dash in Defender 2004, mark 1. Made out of fiberglass. 10" touch screen, custom computer behind. GPS, media, etc.
