Well I took the gamble. Spent $40 on a pack of 2 handhelds from the local hardware store.
They worked extremely well yesterday. Everything that I needed. Runs on AAAs, no complicated menus, speaker quality more than adequate, and range was fine for rockhopping-spotting.
Reception isn't brilliant, but thats an advantage. It's like having the squelch way down (up?). It doersn't pick up other users on the channel, just those in the immediate vicinity. And it doesn't seem to have feedback problems with the main radio, if left on in the car.
At $20, I can afford to lose them. But didn't this time.
