It looks sturdy and well protected but it is also heavy and bulky. Since when did Renault start making Military vehicles?

The Land Rover is better suited to "Peace Keeping" roles. How can you keep the peace coming in with an agro stance like that!?
The Defender also gets plenty of grass roots R&D in the expedition / 4WD markets. A soley military vehicle would lose that long term contribution to its development.

I always say that the one thing in favour of Fiat cars is that they are marginally better than a Renault.

Who were descended from honest Danish seafarers, traders, and merchants.
Hrolfgangir (Rolf the Marcher) was the first Duke of Normandy. He came from somewhere near modern Fakse in Denmark. My wife is a descendant from the line of one of Willy the Bastard's cousins.
A German friend of mine if fond of saying that the French have not won a home game against Germany since before Waterloo.

The Americans have states of military alerts called DefCon (Defense Condition)1,2,3,&4. The French have run, hide, surrender, collaborate.

Most of the dudes on William the Conquerors side were Franks anyway, under Count Eustace of Bologne.
And it has been argued that Willliam had a greater claim to English throne than Harald did. Harald was not a popular King and was despised by most of his subjecs.

It does, doesn't it. I always wanted one. Preferably a half-track, with a couple of Frigidaire .50 cals in the back to deal with road hogs & speed cameras would be nice.

I am afraid I missed the point - why should looks have the slightest impact on the choice of a front line combat vehicle? A parade vehicle perhaps, but not one that is designed for combat (or for that matter any real use).

France Terror Alert
Jacques Chirac has officially raised the French terror alert from "Run" to "Hide". There are only two higher alert levels in France, which are "Surrender" and "Collaborate". The rise was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory - effectively crippling their military.
