View Full Version : TC & ABS Warning Lights

Gents, from time to time the TC and ABS lights stay on after cranking up the beast. If I stop and turn it off and re-start, all is subsequently well. I have noticed it sporadically in the past, however of late (80K) it appears to be occurring more often. I’m assuming the ECU occasionally simply gets a tad confused, however I’m beginning to become a feared that something blacker may be afoot.
Anyone else encountered this, or have any thoughts or ideas ??
Cheers

My ABS/TC lights were coming on. It was fixed by replacing the ABS module. This fortunately was covered by the used car warranty. It wasn't cheap. They installed a second hand one at a cost of over $2000. A new one is around $5000 - or so they tell me.

That would be modulator, not module. There are now service parts available that negate the requirement of complete component replacement.

We've fitted a few repair kits then replaced the modulator shortly afterwards.

We have got a kit here for one of our customers. There could be some truth in what you say, this is the second kit! (Will be fitted to a different modulator that we have here from a previous replacement).

My fender went in to the stealer for the same issue today. Just got the call, apparently it needs a new rear left ABS Sensor. 2 Week wait. yay

You will find lots of info on this if you search the forums - but I have a theory that may help.
I read somewhere that dirty brake fluid was a major contributor to the modulator failures.... whether that is true or not - not sure - I'm NOT a mechanic.
That said... my Disco had started to produce the 3 lights fairly regularly and I was starting to sweat a little.
I asked my mechanic to change the fluid for me... despite the fact it is changed at every service the L/R says it should be changed.
Since that last change - I've done 7,000 km... with out the lights coming on. Despite me getting the lights a couple of times a week for the 3 weeks before:eek::eek::eek:
Not conclusive I know..... but for the cost of a bit of brake fluid - I'll be changing mine more often.
Cheers,
Mark

Interesting point .. the fluid was changed .. (so I'm told) a couple of weeks ago as part of the 80K service.

Just because it looks clean, may not be the case. Brake fluid is Hygroscopic. Which means it absorbs water. So for the cheap fix it is, doing a fluid change could be the answer. Just make sure you get the good stuff and not cheap fluid. Only a few $$ more usually.

Heard this said before and it's not worth the breath the dealer used to speak the lies. What it means is they charged you for a fluid change even though the apprentice only topped the fluid up, if he even remembered to do that.

The problem usually originates from a dirty sensor, easy with no warrantty clean it yourself.
Interesting point, recently I needed a new TD5 head gasket,2 weeks wait EX UK via Landrover.I got one ex eastern states in 2 days.

I to had these light up and stay on after a bit of sand work. They would not go out.I had only owned myTD5 for 2month [2nd hand 74000 km] and knew of 3ABS units that had been replaced under warranty for other owners. All learnt during my pre-purchase research.Thought here comes my first LR owners penalty[$2500] Got in touch with Mark at Beechboro 4+4 in Perth who cleared the fault with his computer.Hasnt occured since touch wood.

Your problem sounds like it could be a ABS sensor or module creating an intermitant fault.
This can be caused by many wonderful things!!!!
I'd be blowing compressed air around the hub to clear all the crap from the ABS sensors (this has worked for me twice before, that is until the next trip)
If that doesn't work I'd be taking the car to get plugged into the computer to get the fault read, yes it costs money but think of the time you'd save from finding out what is wrong instantly as opposed to guesswork and the crossing of fingers.

On the brake fluid thing.....
STAY CLEAR OF BLACKLOCKS... (ford in wodonga)
Stretch (bloke at work) was charged to replace his brake fluid in his ford as part of a service... He wasnt happy with how the brakes were after the service and bought it into work after much debating with ford....(and loosing)
He tested the brake fluid which was ment to be dot3 stuff...
and its boiling point was sub 150 degrees according to the tester... this is just lower than the "its fubar replace it" point of Dot 1.
