Anybody watched that free DVD that came with the latest 4wd monthly mag????
What a hoot, they buy 2 "old bangers" for 2 grand each and set out to destroy them.
There is an 84 Rangie and an 84 Pootrol, the Rangie was pretty impressive but the pootrol shone on the beach drags, surprising as the 2.8 would have had a heavier vehicle to tow.
Very entertaining.
Apparently thae are going to do it again soon, but with a pair of diesel old bangers.
Cant wait to see a few of the AULRO Rangies sporting the 4WD monthly snorkels:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah was good. Looked a laugh to do. Surprised the rangie did not do so well on the sand.
But they did give the rangie a slating at the start. But did not cause as much problems as the Nissan. In the mag they say the nissan broke down alot more than the rangie
Also have to rember the rangie had road tyres and the nissan had off road tyres. Make a differance.
mmm did think was that was on purpose to put the rangie on road tyres and the nissan on off road tyres. Just to show up the rangie in tipical 4x4 monthly land rover bashing style:)

thats the best dvd I've seen for ages-thats good entertaninment. They really should have put equal shoes on both cars tho-that was a huge disadvantage for the RR. Didnt it just sound so good the old girl!. I want to get another one now. I wonder how long it will be before some 'environmentaalists' / anti4wd lobby person harpoons 4wdmonthly for setting such a terrible hoony example??

Was a great watch, but have to agree with everyone else that it was not really fair that the rangie got all terrains.

I agree. They need to keep there Nissan fans happy and there mentalities that anyhting LR is unreliable and crap sort of attitude. Throw the muddies on the Rangie and the Pootrol would have been outclassed as it should have been

Despite Roothy's anti-LR sentaments, still a funny bastard. Just wouldn't want him cooking for me though

Still a good DVD. 4WD Monthly is still the only mag I buy, great value for money. It's a bit more related to average 4WD entusuiasts and shows you don't have to have all the bull**** to enjoy yourself. More LR content would be good though (even though they have more than any other 4WD mag in this country).

Yeah that was pretty good but that sand hill the rangie couldn't get up was a joke i reckon they did that for the tie(Can't have the nissan lose)
If you have a look at the photo's on this forum(Some of Yabbies i think) that come up randomly at bottom of the page the same hill is in them with Rangies, and Tdi/V8 disco's going up it no worry's. That run up they had was more than enough.
Still, great to watch and good to see they at least had a Rangie in it.

I smell a rat!!

84 rangie!! Wrong, was at least 85.
SU carbs on rangie!! Wrong, were Solex/Strombergs.
Sticking slides in carbs fixed by carb cleaner!! I doubt they were sticking - certainly not where they cleaned the slides.
Oil in carbs to lubricate slides!! Wrong, it is for the damper.

The snorkles and driving were a joke, as was the disadvantage of AT tyres on rangie.

Rant off!!

Pat needs to learn how to reverse around witches' hats:eek: . And I think Roothy has a secret Land Rover hidden down in his shed that he only drives late at night:D - similar scenario to the Ford Cortina that Lowndes had hidden away when he was driving for Holden!

I reckon it was just a bit of fun all round. Patski is a Rover man now, 'cause he drives a Defender 130 dual cab. Making it a draw keeps everyone happy; or is that unhappy....made me smile though! Chris.

Only 85, late model instrument cluster on early dash with stereo in ****e spot, late model seats to, and LT77 you would have cottened on to this when he shifted reverse, upto the left

I watched it and overall thought it was pretty good and funny. But there was some bull and Pat needs to learn how to drive a Rangie (I am sure he can drive better than that). It was obvious that the Rangie would win, but there was some furphy driving to create a draw. For starters you can not put muddies on one and ATs on the other and call it a fair test. I have owned both these vehicle an 84 Patrol and an 84 Rangie. Both were great cars. The Rangie was a lot better though (even though the Nissans drivetrain was indestructable) overall and the Rangie excelled on sand so I was a little puzzled at the sand test. My old Rangie flogged most other fourbies on sand inc 2004 model Toyota 100s and Nissans. We even had guys tell us that there was no way we would get back up a sand dune from an estuary as all others had to be winched or snatched. Both 84 Rangies that were there did it easy, my mates in auto and mine in 2nd low. The GU Nissan boys were even excited and were out video taping the Rangies roaring up the dune.
One for Landy Andy, I reckon if I still had the Rangie it would have got up that dune in Esperance over Easter.

I thought it was pretty good, and it's a good mag.
THe draw/tie thing is lame though.
Any subjective thing that is decided by judgement and ends in a draw is either
a) Fixed or
b) shows a lack of nuggets on the judges behalf.

If a test, comp, etc whatever is done to decide a winner - is a draw not then a completely wasted exercise?
What are the chances of two different things finishing all square. Zip.

(Not talking about sporting contests, but competition decided subjectively by judges.

My TD5 made it up first go

As for Rangies making it up the only one that did get bogged down was Scouse, but that was on the top of the dune, he did have a motorbike on his roofracks and he gets bogged everywhere.
Tony and Morgan were so confident they reversed up it

Rangies can get up that dune easily

I watched the DVD and thought whats with the AT's but refecting on it know when the Range Rover first came out (1970) the Poms ran a fleet from the top of America to the bottom (Canada to Cape Horn) This they did with MUDDIES (Firestone SAT's I think) and they suffered broken axles which they blamed on to the tyres.:o

So even though the tyre choice for the Rangie might seem strange it might have worked out in our favour (how much crap would have been said if the axles broke?)

As for the sand drags, judging by the revs he stayed in first gear you could see the car run out of puff before the bottom of the hill total lack of momentum.

Almost cried when they cut open the bonet to put out the snorkle. (Use to own a 85 Rangie and still love them) but it was all done in good fun.

Good laugh and better than the last DVD:D

Bah! I'm still waiting for mine. Anybody else subscribe? Did u get a phone call the other day about renewal? I gave the prat a mouthfull of $hit and said if they ever ring me again peddling wares I will not be re-subscribing. As bad as telemarketers in the middle of dinner, makes me furious.
Anyway.. I will subscribe again, the only mag I will buy now beside bike mags.
