Hey guys I am still looking rarther than buying. I have now changed my mind to a defender after originally starting at a RR then disco. I have some new questions about the vehicle. Basicly, out of the box, what are they comparable to in ability. I want the 4 cycinder TD one. I am thinking early 90's. I just cant get over the looks and would be very disapointed if I never owned one.
Also towing, I know the disco's can do 3.5T and 350kg down. Are these the same?
Thanks again.

Out of the box, and talking offroad, probably the only comparable vehicle is the Discovery 3, if you discount concerns about its electronics. It will outperform almost any other four wheel drive, and also carry more. I believe towing specs are the same as the disco. I would be concerned if you are buying this type of vehicle mainly on looks. The Defender is designed as a utility vehicle, and it will not have the same level of comfort, particularly noise levels, as, for example, the Disco, but is a little more capable, has a lot more room for gear plus a lot of minor advantages such as hose out floors and does not get as hot standing in the sun due to the near vertical windscreen and the vents.
The one you cite looks a bit cheap to me, although it is very hard to judge condition from the ad, and at this age price depends mainly on condition and service history. Mileage quoted is not excessive provided it has been well maintained, but if it has not, or has been badly knocked about, there could well be expensive problems looming, which could only be guessed at, although an inspection could give a much better idea.
Hope this helps.

I would not be buying mainly on looks, but as you can see from the advert, it has as much space in the rear as a dual cab ute, but is lockable. Also at a pinch it holds 9 people. Camping would be awesome in a car like this with all the stuff. I think the practicle side really is awesome. Not a great car for the family I wouldnt think tho.

The Defender can be quite suitable as a family car, as long as the family does not expect great comfort - I frequently have gone on trips with myself, son, d-i-l and three kids and all the gear, no problems, no complaints. And this is in a County, which is a lot less polished than the Defender, albeit slightly roomier.

Great family car, my only complaint so far is that while alexs baby seat is in backwards I have to have the passanges seat forwards and there isnt enough room for a passangers legs.
stowage is a dream...
economy is excelent.
But then I grew up in the back of IIa's and III's

Mate its all to easy and it comes down to brass monkeys and how much you have.
If you live in the bush or you are a farmer then go the Defender.
If you are in the suburbs and just love getting out in the bush 4x4 driving every weekend then get the Disco.
If you have lots of brass monkeys and can afford the extra expense that comes with servicing and parts and you are in suburbs get the D3, or if you want that little extra electronic creature comforts and a home lounge on wheels get the Range Rover.
Defender, Disco and Range Rover off road all are just about as capable as each other. Sure some have a little advantage here and there over the other one, but get real they are all Land Rover the best Off Road vehicle available to buy and all can cover the same ground. Some might get a little damage on the front bumper or rear bumper but after market accessories cover all that crap.
If you want to save even more money and compromise strength and Off Road ability get another brand.

Going by the pics it looks fairly stock. As for the comments I bout my Defender due to the looks of a defender. I love the shape. You want to get it checked before buying but the price might reflect the kind of trade in prices they were offered.
