View Full Version : Prejudice?

Is it just me or do other LR owners continue to be astonished by the prejudice or ignorance of non-LR owners?
When I drove my Series III LWB from south east NSW to Broome and back a few years ago via the Oodnadatta Track, Tanami Track and Gibb River Road (16,000km without a single problem) I got used to people being surprised that a 26 year old LR would do the trip.
However I didn't expect the same sort of reaction now that I have a 98 Traytop Defender. When I arrived in Alice Springs and told some of the locals that I had come from the NSW south coast, their comments were all along the lines of, "What? You mean you drove all that way in a Defender?" So I took great delight in telling them that the last two times I had done the same trip I had done it in a 1973 Series III.
I often wonder whether any of these critics have actually driven a Defender or do they just repeat the uninformed prejudiced comments they hear from others.

In the case of those individuals its better to sit there and look stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
It ****s me off when people do that. Next time you see a cruiser do the same thing before they get in and see the reactions:D

I think it just all comes down to advertising like all things.
Look in any 4WD Mag and what gets most page space?.....Jap Crap
Who advertises most on TV.....Jap Crap
Who sponsors more TV travel shows....Jap Crap
The Cruisers, Pajero's, etc are getting shoved in your face all day long. You rarely (in comparison to the rest) see Land Rovers advertised, or on TV in the travel shows or sponsorship
Thats because we own Cult vehicles, not mass produced lounge chairs.
How many Cruiser owners can say they own or have owned a handmade vehicle?
Do Land Rover really need to advertise on TV and radio? Other makes do
I'd prefer to watch Camel trophey and G4 videos read about massive feats in history made possible from my choice of vehicle to see how my car performs than watch some tosser in a drug induced ad company show me softroaders jumping from building to building dukes of hazard style or drifting around corners (how do you get a proper 4wd to drift?)
If thats what the majority want to drive, I'll tell them all to get knotted, my car has faults, all cars have faults, but mines a Land Rover:D

It's our little secret.... Land Rover....
Trouble is with all the advertising for soft roaders is that those who buy them think they can go anywhere, just like in the ads.
How many rescues have you done - for nongs in XTrails, Tributes etc?
They don't like the loose deep sand where I am...

I love it when a Landcruiser driver tries to talk down Landrover, i just ask them "is 73% of all landcruisers ever made still driving on the roads all round the world". Stops them in there tracks

Perhaps they are the people responsible for some of the silly comments in the suggestion books in National Parks.
I noticed that several of the comments in the books at both ends of Owen Springs near Alice Springs suggested that the road should be graded. Some of the comments were even quite rude about it.
Didn't those people read the sign at the entrance or the label on the maps. It is not a road . It is a 4WD track. If those people drove on the track in an inappropriate vehicle with limited capabilities, that is their problem, not NPWS's.
I was tempted to suggest to NPWS that they make the bits near the entrances rougher to keep out the whingers who don't have fair dinkum 4WDs. That would leave more room in the National Park for us LR drivers.

I sometimes field the questions from the "unknowing" about why I drive a Land Rover by saying that I started as a teenager driving a Landie and have owned a Toyota and a Nissan since (true) and thats why I went back to driving a Landie.
When quizzed further, my smile just gets better and bigger. :) :D :tease:
Why try to bother to explain? There are thems that know and those that don't.

One of my cadets told me my D3 was 'sick'. He even asked if I would take him and his girlfriend to the school ball in it!

Reminds me of the consistant bagging I used to get at 1 Armd regt as the ONLY person who drove a landrover by choice.... 2 landrover on top stories came from there...
the first was when after bragging about never having to worry about flat batteries for starting. One of the toymota (derogatory expletive string here) drivers decided to open my landie for me, turn on all the batteries then turn on all the lights, and left it that way while we did a month long field ex...
I came back to find 3 flat batteries and about 8 of them standing around laughing and hanging on the poor old girl, not the brightest bunch them tankies its a dead give away something sus is about when the idiots are hanging on it before Ive even got my keys out...
try the key, not even an idiot light (no surprise) so. out with the dolphin torch, pull the battery, prime the carby by hand, disconnect the main batteries, connect the dolphin 6 v across the coil and earth to power up the coil, out with the crank handle and 3rd swing she fires, turn on the ignition, turn on the batteries and leave her running while I put the gear in the back... climb in and...
"hey fairy, can you give us a jump I have a flat battery, I left something on?" (there are some days when Murphy smiles at me)
"Sorry mate for some reason I have 500 odd amp hours worth of flat batteries to charge with a 35 amp alternator, no chance... and no, you cant borrow the jumper leads." engage first and pull out of the car park
Then there was the troy dan wannabe troop leader who did nothing but bag out the 110's and 6bies and how they were nothing compared to the god fear inspiring earth shacking make your testicals shrivel in fear when it drives over the horizon Ive done all these mods, have 5 antennae, more lights than a myers at christmas and wear an akubra hat Toymota.
Then after that little windup he'd open the big guns on the piddley poor capabilities of my series and why dont I get a real 4x4... then one trip out to the beach who should I come across stuck up to the diffs in beach sand digging... and you can guess what the next order was from my reply... (after Id driven in his tracks and then pulled up alongside him close enough to touch his vehicle)
"Oh no sir, I cant do that, its only a series landrover, and if you got your mighty rig stuck I will have no hope of getting close enough to help get you out.."
select 1 low, release the clutch and Idle off...
Remember its not how well you can sling the sticky stuff back that counts... ITs how well you can shake it off an come up shiney afterwards that really upsets them...
(oh and dont mention that you dont have to worry about the body rust after going near the beach, especially not after turning up at the BBQ first and drinking half the carton)

Nahh, serial insomniac, chat room junkie, forum posting freak but most importantly...
Both of those are my Favorite Landrover stories...
Get me on the turps and listen to them do the fishermans catch of the day...
starts out simple and short and ends up really big with the full arm movements.
Theyre a lot shorter with out the really descriptive diatribes I Generally like to poke at toymota drivers.
Besides if I typed for a living, dontcha reckon I could do better than my wowful spelling and puncuation?
(yes you can hang on both)

Unfortunately here in the NT it's Nissan Toyota so of course I cop a lot of **** for driving not one but 2 Land Rovers. Its even worse when you become temporarily motionless in a bog hole, just like the Cruiser before you and the Nissan behind you - some things you have to winch through if you want to get to a good fishing spot!
Up here we also refer to VB as Greening Australia and I whole heartedly agree with the opinions already expressed about narrow minded, VB swilling...
And what's the first thing they say when they get in the Disco? "Gee you sit up high in this, its very easy to see out of."
