The body, chassis rear axle etc are pretty much standard S3, engine and gearbox pretty much carburetted Rangerover, and the front axle, steering etc are similar to the Rangerover, but adapted for leaf springs and drum brakes and are unique to the Stage 1. The diffs are standard Rangerover. I think the brakes are pretty much the same as the Landrover 6, and wheels and tyres are standard S3.

The Series 3 parts book covers them, and is available on line, but I don't have a URL. Not sure about the workshop manual, but I expect it covers them as well.

Yes, they are drum all round. The swivel housings are unique so it is not possible to simply fit Rangerover or Disco discs. There are no bolt on disc bits that I know of. I think the kit for the standard S3 will fit, but I am not sure these are still available anywhere, let alone in Australia. In good condition the the brakes are quite adequate for the performance, even if you take the restrictors out of the intake manifold.

There is/was a stage 1 supplement manual that was meant to be read with the series 3 workshop manual.
It covered the engine & gearbox. I have got one somewhere.

G'day Sclarke :)

The Stage 1 was basically a Series 3 that was fitted with a 3.5 ltre Range Rover V8 detuned to 89 HP and mated to an LT95 G'box, the Front axle was unique as it had CV's fitted, you shouldn't have to much of a problem in adapting a disc brake 110 axle, the spring mounts would need to be retroed to leaf, and the tubes matched to the Series 3 track, 2'' narrower I think, the driveshafts differ in length from Ser 3's but otherwise the Series 2/2a/3 workshop book would suffice, with an early rangie book for the Eng/Trans:) brakes are the same as 6cylinder models and early 110's rears are the same as LWB series/110 up until disc rear.
they go well on gas;)

Correct. Except rear diff is Salisbury, brakes standard series 3. Wheels are different to Series 3 as they a raised ridge around centre and unique offset. High range transfer gears are lower than R.R.

The manuals you need are the Series III manual and the stage 1 supplement (which I have and it is only thin - so happy to photocopy for you - still need to do it for someone else).

The brakes are the same as the 6cyl models, so pretty good. It would be possible to fit one of the various disc kits though - or make a custom system, which I have seen a few times (have some pics of one setup too - made by THE 109 from outerlimits).

All Series 3 109 have a salisbury rear diff, and according to the parts book it is identical on the Stage 1 except for the ratio. I'm not sure those wheels are unique to the Stage 1 - the description fits the wheels on the Series 3 diesel 2.25 I have.

Isnt that part of the fun, making it up to the task. But seriously theyre a pretty bullet proof engine. Same blocks been in use for thirty odd years.

The V8 is up to the task - by the time it was put in the Stage 1 it had been in the Rangerover for nearly ten years, and while some of the later more highly stressed versions had a few problems, I have heard nothing but good about that engine. Only two problems - fuel consumption, and the fact that the last Stage 1 was built over twenty years ago and has probably done a lot of miles.

Hill climbing is dependant on your tyres and nerves. The better they are the higher you go. I never had good enough tyres:p .
In short, they are pretty good. Take Jerries...:D

My comment re rear diff was in correction of quote that Stage 1's had R.R. diffs. I stand corrected re rims as the only ones I've seen on Series 3's have been without ridge.
