Someone on here (Scallops) has put down $5K as a deposit on one with delivery promised in the 2nd quarter of 2007. Search on his name and you will find the thread.

The '07 Defender is due in Australia from the second quarter next year but a dealer in Brisbane suggested that it would more likely be June before I get it. I ordered a white 110 - from what I've read it should be worth the wait.:D
No firm pricing is available as yet - but dealer again suggested mid $50k. I did pay a deposit to secure the order.

How do people think the new diesel motor will stack up against the TD5 ??

On paper it should perform pretty much the same - torque and power figures are pretty much the same. What is not as obvious is that it appears that the spread of torque and power is a lot better than the Td5, add the six speed box, and it should be a lot more driveable (not that there is anything wrong with the Td5).
What cannot be determined from the published information is how good a job they have done in modifying it and installing it to stand up to offroad use, and whether it has any strange features (such as a tendency to airlocks in the cooling system) that are likely to lead to premature failure, or, for that matter, just how durable it is compared to the Td5 or indeed the Tdi. We will have to wait probably several years to see how these work out (unless it is pretty bad!).

Won't the to-and-froms ever learn. There is no substitute for cubic inches. First thing to do with a new model is to stick a drawing of a decent sized simple powerful engine down on the drawing board and then sketch the car around it. Five litres of naturally aspirated diesel to start with.

Does anyone have an engine output graph (torque and horsepower chart), the transmission ratios, and the tyre sizes. It could be educational to do a gear split chart.

Without entering into any argument on your basic premise - it is not a new model, it is a re-engine of an existing model, and there was never any possibility of it being a major redesign, so the drawing board never entered into it. So the engine had to be one that would fit in the space, and was already in production.

Yes, John, I know, but one would think they could find something better than a puny four cylinder from a buzz box plumber's van.

The TDV6 would have been an improvement over the TD5, then whack in the ZF six speed + the new dash + the bonnet bulge (:D :p ) and LR would have produced one of the best vehicles on the market.
Instead, they chose to go for a second rate engine and lunch out on the legend for a few more years.
By the time the 'revised' Defender arrives in Oz it will be up against a twin turbo V8 diesel in the Troopie....

I agree that the TDV6 at least as an option would have been a good idea (assuming it will fit, which I don't know, although I would be surprised if it didn't) - but of course the Australian market for Defenders is very small, and Landrover have already shown that they have little interest in the Australian utility vehicle market. But most Defenders will be sold in the UK and other EU markets where not only are they a popular utility vehicle, but are price sensitive. And putting the TDV6 in would mean quite a few buyers would be getting them instead of Discos - the last thing Landrover would want.
