i now know i can get from brisbane to geelong by staying on the freeways and not need an e-toll

i next mission is to get from geelong to the port of melbourne to catch the spirit of tassie,

Q - do i need an e-toll for the most direct route or will i need a street directory to detour around the tolls, i'm guessing there may be some e-toll only roads

If you have a tag, use it. I did so using my NSW tag in Melbourne last year without any problems and I've never been billed on my toll charge account.

I drove from Brisbane to Melbourne to Geelong to Point Lonsdale to Port of Melbourne to catch the Spirit of Tassie in December 2004. I couldn't tell you the route I took but I can tell you I never paid a toll. I didn't even try to avoid tolls it just worked out that way.
I had an E-toll unit in the car anyway.

No toll gates to get from Geelong to Port Melbourne (Station Pier)

Straight up Princes Hwy , over the Westgate Bridge, Turn off at Kings Way turn off, follow the signs through South Melbourne and on into Port Melbourne. Too easy.

The attached route is 53.19 mins - and it is all main roads - but no tolls

Most direct, and quickest.

If you give me the full departure address in Geelong (just the street name) - I'll be able to give you a totally accurate directction plan

The planning is via major routes - but avoids toll roads

"Port of Melbourne"?

it's actually a suburb called Port Melbourne and your destination is Station Pier.

and...

Torquay is not quite Geelong, it's about 35 km's away down the surfcoast and you don't have to go into Geelong to get there especialy if you are driving direct on your journey south. I'd consider going Albury - Sheparton - Bendigo - Daylesford - Ballarat - outer Geelong - Torquay if you have the time as it's more interesting than sitting on a highway at 110 km/hr.

*edit* 55 surf coast highway is in Geelong, not Torquay... 55 surf coast road is in Torquay on the right hand side of the main drag just after all of the factory outlet surf shops (ripcurl billabong etc..)
if you use the links below you can enter in the address and it will give you a map which you can print
http://www.street-directory.com.au/sd_new/mapsearch.cgi

but personally I'd trust the map on this one...

In order to pay tolls, you would really have to ignore all the signs on how to get to Geelong while travelling south and end up on the Tullamarine freeway heading into inner city Melbourne, as mentioned earlier in the thread, you follow the Hume highway to the Western Ring road and follow it to the Princes Highway and then follow the Prices HWY to the outskirts of Geelong where it turns off to the 'Surfcoast - Torquay, Lorne, Great Ocean Road' Even if you stuffed up and ended up in Geelong's CBD, it's only a little city and you can't really get lost there... Torquay is significantly smaller - the main road follows the beach and all the accomdation etc is there, you simply cannot get lost, it aint possible.

I hope you are not there for the Christmas/New Year period - it's a mad house!

Just a word of advice. If you are camping around Tassie in December/January and have not got a fixed itinerary with booked campsites then you might be in for some trouble.
When I was there we quickly learned that the caravan parks fill up very quickly so even though we had no fixed time frame or stops we decided it would be best to decide in the morning where we want to camp that night and ring ahead. Even then we sometimes missed out on spots.
We spent some nights in free camp grounds with no facilities which I would prefer as opposed to the crowded tent cities that my Wife prefers. However to quell the uprising if we stayed somewhere with no facilities we would 'visit' the facilities at a nearby caravan park for a shower.

No tolls, just plenty of speed cameras under some of the overpasses, some you can see as you drive towards them, the others are hidden so you can't see them until you've driven past.

 better you than me...

do you have everything booked? I assume so... coz if you dont, you will be sleeping in your car on the roadside or in a carpark - which is illegal in the surfcoast shire during the holiday period - and it's enforced seriously!

I slept in the car one night just west of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road in late December(after Christmas before New Years). It was so busy that it was almost impossible to pull off the road to enquire about accomodation let alone get any! We were not the only ones to sleep in cars in that carpark that night either. I had no trouble from any officers....just my Wife :D

West of Lorne is a fair way past Torquay! :D

if you tried that between queenscliff, torquay, barwon heads, anglesea area between Christmas and the first week of January you would most likely have woken up with a ticket stuck under the windscreen wiper... :nazilock:

much easier to open a farm gate and park inside (with permission and/or a sixpack of course!)

It's only 37km in a straight line. Not far in Qld terms but then we are talking Victoria :D

I guess that puts it outside the local sheriff area though.

distance aint that much true, but the density of people drops off dramatically once you pass Lorne... I doubt Mr Plod gets down to Apollo Bay from Geelong!

if you have never driven the great ocean road, you are in for a treat "straight line" distance can probably be tripled in term sof distance driven in parts...

I've driven it and I agree it is windy but I wasn't going to click on all the corners in Oziexplorer to get a true road distance :)

Maybe they also turned a blind eye at that time because the place was so busy. I mean if there is nowhere to stay and you have nowhere else to go then you don't have much choice. It is something my Wife always brings up about that trip so it must have been a highlight:D

the tolls in Melbourne are basically tullamarine airport freeway direct to the city.

the henry bolte bridge linking north and south melbourne without having to go through the city

the tunnel linking west melbourne to south eastern suburbs and along the monash freeway to about toorak.

other than those melbourne is toll free

with the airport freeway to avoid toll take the west ring exit and follow till links up with geelong freeway

with the city take kingsway exit and then on to princess highways and then cut across to warrigal road to link up with the Monash freeway to head out to gippsland or head down neapean hwy and link up with frankston mornington freeways.
