yeah close although I seem to need 2 coffees before getting to work..
1. hot with breakfast to warm the system up and get it firing on all pots quickly
and the second an iced coffee to regulate running temperatures while under the stress of coming up to speed for the day (usually had while driving to work)

Step 1. Put the jug on.
Step 2. Roll a cig.
Step 3. Make a cup of coffee
Step 4. Smoke cig while intermittently drinking the coffee
Step 5. Do stuff
I avoid situations where steps 1-4 are not possible :D

My late father's accountant used to have a triple scotch for breakfast, along with a substantial meal and pot of tea. A huge man, 6'5" and around 26 stone, he loved to eat and drink well.

sorry guys....i dont drink coffee....cant even stand the smell of it......
now tea.......thats a different thing....i can drink that stuff all day.....and usually do in winter......
if i cant get a cup of tea.....i will have a can of "V" instead.....
then a tea.....another v.......more tea.....couple more v's......
the best part of working in the newsagency was i had a fridge full of v on one side....
and the coffee machine on the other......it was perfect.......i would make myself a nice cup of tea........and while that was cooling down a bit to optimum temp.......
i would have a v.........or two.......by which time the tea was ready......then i would wash that down with a v......
i guess i was a bit like roothy and his beer.......

You know, I often find that people who have a strong aversion to coffee usually haven't ever experienced a really good one.
Filter coffee - is cr%p
Plunger coffee - is also cr%p
Instant coffee - is very, very cr%p (unless it's in a milkshake)
and stovetop, percolated coffee is, I'm afraid to say, cr%p too.
The best birthday present my wife ever bought me was a proper coffee machine (and I don't mean those little $100 jobs from Hardly Normal). We're talking a 16 bar, Gaggia Classic with two chunky switches and a big knob for the steam. The Defender of coffee machines. That was two and a half years ago and we reckon that at about $3 a cup (modest price) it paid for itself in the first 6 months. She also bought a proper semi-commercial grinder and we get beans from Merlo here locally which guarantees that they are freshly roasted.
In fact, if you have any sort of coffee - beans, ground, whatever - that is older than about 14 days, chuck it out. It goes off, and keeping it in the fridge doesn't actually help much. It gets to moist in there - better to have a cool, dry cupboard.
Now my wife and I both work from home, so we have the luxury of a decent coffee EVERY morning. I deliberately hold off having a cup when I get up, and not even at breakfast. I wait until morning tea then fire up the bad boy and spend 15 minutes in caffiene nirvana. The process of grinding and extracting your own espresso is involved, certainly not fast-food, but extremely theraputic. I find making a good cup of coffee similar to washing the car - it allows me to have a complete mental break from whatever I was doing.
I was tutored in the black-art of coffee making by a friend who actually worked as a barrista at Merlo. She told me all the tricks and also alerted me to the failings of many so called coffee houses. The cardinal sin is having dirty equipment. If you have coffee at a cafe towards the end of the day it will most likely be bitter. If the coffee is over or under extracted (comes out too slow or fast) it will also be bitter. Probably 90% of all the coffee people drink in cafes is incorrectly made - and hence, poor disadvantaged souls like Zook are forever lost to the joys of pure espresso.

hehe.....dont worry about me.....the smell alone puts me off it.....i have tried it and was disgusted.......
but i do make a really good capuccino.......or so my customers used to tell me.....
and i can vouch for the freshness and cleanliness mentioned above......
if you have the opportunity to use a coffee machine.....you will discover there is an art to making a decent cup of coffee.....
and for those who appreciate a good cuppa they will know the difference......
even the sharpness of the blades in the grinder makes a difference.......
if they are getting dull they get hot doing their job and can burn the coffee before you even start making it........
how course or fine the grind is makes a huge difference...........
how much it is compacted into the group will make a difference......
even the same brand of coffee will vary in flavour from batch to batch.....depending on the roasting process......
and thats just to name a few of the basics.........
i know how to make the stuff.....and can tell a good brew from a bad one.....but just dont ask me to taste the stuff.......
i hate it.....

Well I guess if you used to sell the stuff then that's a good thing. Never be a "user" of the gear you're pushing. That's what I used to tell my wife when she was selling Tupperware - she got addicted all the same.

I have to say I only drink NATO
Big and Bad
instant
white (usually not milk but sweetened condensed from a tube)
2 sugars
served at body temperature so that when the shooting starts I can skull it before making the mad dash to the pit/crawling up into the turret/moving the vehicle.
for the perfect nato..
get a cups canteen, some almost hot water, cold water and a 24hr ration pack
put 3 sachets of coffee and 3 sachets of sugar into the cups canteen and fill with hotish water to the bottom of the first rivit that holds the handle on.squeeze in a random quantity of condensed milk, swill the cups canteen around or stir with the coffee sachet, if you drop it in it doesnt matter you wont notice. add cold water to the top of the second rivit.
For the yuppie version, sit your sweetend condensed milk on the engine bay sponson just under the exhaust manifold of an M113 for about a week or the exhaust shield of a 110/mog/mack for the same amount of time.. IT make a nice caramel coffee...
the best bit of it is the treacle thick stuff that sits in the bottom of the cups canteen. That bit of it you could inject into whales that have had heart attacks and they'd come round.

Our routine is that the first up (usually me) sleepwalks to the kitchen, grinds some beans and stokes up the stovetop espresso coffee thingo (one of the two piece allow italian jobs). By trial and error we got it right. Because of the heat involved it works best if there is just a smidgen of water in the bottom of the filter. This avoids the bitter brew maiking steam blast that happens if you don't fill it enough. Big mugs, slightly more than half filled with full fat milk in the microwave to warm, coffee off heat the SECOND it purges all the water and starts to steam, add to milk.
Enjoy the second half of the mug after the first half woke you up properly and then ponder the outcome of the day.
Instant kills me but it gets the kick going.
I used to get bad migraines until I started drinking coffee. I normally only have one coffee a day, but if I haven't had one by lunchtime I have a shocking headache all day. The life of an addict I guess...

OK - you win. You are by far the more geeky coffee snob here. But I have to say, even in Melbourne there are just as many clue-less baristas. They are just diluted a bit by the number of decent ones.
Now in Italy...

yeah the clueless ones are plentiful... but so is good coffee (mainly from Italian operated cafes I must admit)
to be honest I'm not a crazy coffee geek, but there is just so little good coffee here that I had to 'invest' in my own gear if I wanted something decent in the morning...

The smell of coffee reminds me of poison.
I get really nervous when i am asked to make someone one at work. :no2:
I don't really drink or eat anything before I am AWAKE (probably because I am always running late, always!!!), maybe just a glass of water. A shower is the only necessity in my mornings!!! Breakky comes later - about 2-3 hous later. Green Tea or some Rooibus (spelling???) is then the go.

Engine room coffee, made in ships engine rooms and sugar mills, and no doubt anywhere else live steam is available. Take a large enamel or stainless steel coffee pot with pouring spout large enough for the numbers partaking. Add as many handfulls of coarse ground coffee beans as necessary for the numbers, fill with clean water, stick the steam spigot into the water and give it a hit of 600 degree live steam for a couple of seconds not at such velocity to blow thge contents all over you or anyone else standing near, allow to stop boiling and the grounds to settle then serve in large enamel mugs. Girls, pooves, and deckies add sugar and milk, black gang drinks it as it comes.
