Flamin' heck.
I just finished flushing the cooling system sealer and filled the car with coolant. I started the car and heard the sound of ignition flashover. I looked behind the engine and saw a spark a good 13mm long. So I stopped the car to give the coil pack a wipe over in case it had some over spray from the hose. As soon as I touched the spark plug lead, that tower on the coil pack fell apart. That may explain the rough running it's had over recent months.
I'm up for a new coil pack which costs about $1800
Bloody Hell!

Hi folks, I think I should have posted my probs as a different thread.
Not meaning to highjack Ron’s thread.
I have just had a call from the dealer and at this stage, the GM transmission, which is usually very good, may have something as simple as blocked filters and the computer has done it’s job and prevented any damage occurring.
On the other hand, the whole transmission may be shot.
Just got to wait and see.

Coming to work this arvo, the car stopped several times - just stopped. So I gave up and went home to get my wife's car.
It stopped several more times on the way home - the last time just as I got home.
It's like a complete loss of power for a short period of time. I noticed that just as I approached home, the tacho dropped to zero thenm came back. That indicates an alternator failure but I don't why that would stop the car.
I'd just driven about 70km, got home and got ready for work so I don't know what's happening. Dunno if it could be related to the dual battery installation I fitted yesterday.

The longest shift I ever had was after working an empty coal train, which we were supposed to run to Lithgow but it took so long to get to Katoomba because of snow causing point failures west of there, that we had to get relieved at Katoomba and then sat around for 4 hours before the first Sydney train got through the snow and this was in the middle of the day, not at night, but you would know all about that sort of thing.

I think I've found the problem.
It's the fuse box - it's intermittent. I must have overstressed it. WEhen I was fitting the SC40 and changing the existing wiring to the back of the car, I unbolted the fuesbox and pulled it out of the way.
It's very touchy around the fuel pump relay RL12 which is a known problem. I'v e already repaired the fuesebox several times - and written the procedure up here: http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/electrical/fusebox.html
Maybe it's time to buy a new one! The problem is that they are over $300 if I recall correctly.
The paper parts catalogue I have lists it as AMR3375 but I note that some suppliers don't list that. They list AMR6405 which is for a later model - maybe that's also the replacement part and not so bad a design!

Hi Ace, I could just never time it right while I was on the railways.
As a school kid, in 1968 or 9, my mother and a neighbour took us up to Katoomba in the train ( the only thing working ). There was snow ploughed 6 foot high in the main street and just about every store had a full sized snowman out front of their shops.
There was no power up there so as soon as you walked into a shop, someone would follow you around with a hurricane lamp ( to make sure you didn’t pinch anything ).
There had been a large derailment about a week earlier at Wentworth Falls and they were still trying to clean the mess up.
A goods train doing over 100 MPH ( the speedo stopped at 104 MPH ) had left the rails right at the platform and it’s load of Portland cement had spilled, got wet and hardened.
Nice job that cleanup would have been in the snow.

Around 1969 I was working in Sydney and living at Summer Hill. I mentioned to a colleague that I was giving up drinking after work as I had woken up a couple of times in the carriage sheds at the end of the line ( East Hills?) and it was bloody cold and a difficult trek back to the road for a cab tripping over tracks and through sheds, bouncing off posts. He lived at Blackheath and said I was a bloody sook. We see lots of them.
Springwood and Katoomba (both places where I work) have a heated waiting rooms but they are locked at night. If they weren't they'd be destroyed.
Today we've had 143mm of rain at Katoomba (up until I left at 11 pm). Some delays on Up trains owing to a tree down over the 1500V overhead wiring just west of Katoomba (I was the signaller on at Katie). I feel sorry for the pax on the Up train - they were stuck for 90 minutes. There was torrential rain so we couldn't even arrange to get them off the train and onto buses or another train parked beside it - too much danger of slip and trip injuries in the rain and dark. The train couldn't go back to Medlow Bath as there was a coalie and a wheat train behind it.
I tell you it's a bit scary when you get the message "Emergency" displayed on the train radio. You think they've just hit a car or something worse. In this case it was the driver of a Down train who saw the tree through the fog and sent out a warning to all trains. The train which was affected stopped 5 metres short of the tree.

Hi Brian, this is what your mate would have struck.
This is one of many jobs I worked out of Lithgow, this one is a wheaty at the eastern end of Lithgow yard.
I took the picture while waiting for a passenger train to go through, then we were off the tackle the hill.
It’s just on dawn and that’s frost on the ground.

I was at the QLD rail museum the other day. The defining bit of trivia for me is that it takes about 5 hours of preparation before a steam train will move on any given day :o Sorry, but that astonished me :D :D

Yep, when I started on the railways, they still had steam and one of the jobs junior staff had was called the” Fire Lighter “ and he would go around starting the fires in engines dew to work that day.
These Fire Lighters usually started about midnight so that the engines could have steam up for the mornings roasters.
Any wonder the now use diesels. Hit the starter button, give the compressor time to fill the air reservoirs and 2 or so minutes later, your off.
Here’s a strange one for you, of all the engines I worked on, steam, diesel, and electric, the dirtiest was the 46 class ( these pictured above ), an electric engine. Go figure
