I'm busting to tell someone but I've been sworn to secrecy till Monday. Posting here won't count will it?
Daughter has just sat HSC. Daughter is away with friends in party mode and has not been answering her mobile for a bit. We get "urgent" phone calls over the weekend and today from Board of Studies wanting to contact her. "It's nothing bad" is all they will tell us. Finally get in touch with daughter to get in touch with B.O.S. and to ring us back and tell us what the hell is going on.
Daughter rings us back.
They wanted to invite her, and make sure she would be available, for a special ceremony on Monday because (in one of her subjects) she
topped the State!:o:o:o

Onya Dave.
My boy is also a brainiac, scored the excellence award for year7 last week.In the walnar tests, wich is suposed to rank all the kids in the state, done in year3 and year7 his point on the graph for maths english spelling and reading is so far ahead of the state average its a joke. There has to be alot of very average kids out there OR VERY AVERAGE TEACHERS.
My boy is very bored with school all to easy, credit to the local teachers they have managed to focus his mind.
Mind you he was in trouble in year four for not showing his workings in 2 and 3 figure multiplication, they thought he was cheating when he said I did it in my head, got him up in front of the class to prove himself on the whiteboard. He kicked **** and was allowed not to show his workings in the future!!!!!

That is really good, it's nice when the children do something for themselves - and feel good aout it.
Give her our congrats, when you tell her you told the world (well the members of AULRO) before you were meant to :wasntme:

Congrats!
I'm not sure if they still have it, but when I finished High School I was a bit of a smarty and got what they called the "Australian Students Prize". Basically it's award to the top 500 students nationwide by the Fed Govt, and as well as a flashy certificate it included $2000 cash. That was in 94, so it may have changed, but if it still exists she may be up for something like that ...

Thanks everyone for the congrats etc.:) I know 'proud parent' tales are the second most boring thing in the world after 'holiday photos' but I had to do it - I'm just so proud and pleased for her.:D:D:D
Her subject was English Extension 1 - studying crime fiction.
The ceremony was this morning in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, a simple presentation by Carmel Tebbutt of a certificate (no cheques sadly) and a promise of an official photo to be posted out to us. What amazed me was the media coverage - I counted 5 TV crews and about ten news photographers. After the ceremony many of the students were interviewed individually by TV and newspaper reporters. Daughter was interviewd by Ch 7, Ch 9, the Sydney Morning Herald and 2 or 3 other papers.
A happy morning was had by all.:)

Thanks for the comment John but I certainly cannot take any credit - she did it all with her own hard work.
It's not quite over yet either, having just got home from Son's school award night I find we have reporters from three newspapers visiting us tomorrow morning for photos! Hooley Dooley! :D:D:D

You can't take it away from your daughter, but in almost all cases the parents have a lot of influence - not in actually helping them do the work, but just in the attitude to education. Very noticeable for example, in my parents - all of my father's brothers and sisters had tertiary education (before WW2!) despite the fact that his father was a farm labourer - in my mother's family she was the only one to even finish high school (she got a B.A.) despite the fact that her father was a tradesman and comparatively well to do - and the reason she did was because she became best friends with my father's sister at school and came under the influence of my father's mother.

DD please do not take this the wrong way... but the press don't have much to cover at this time of year as most things are shutting down. A friend of mine was a journo for the ambulance up here and he said that at this time of year he had journos desperate for a story on a minor snake bite :(
Statistically this is actually the safest time of the year to be out on the roads. Their are usually less deaths per day than any other time during the year. The only reason the media go crazy about it is that there is nothing else for them to talk about. When there is more "news" they will go back to ignoring it.
Having said that, make sure you all bask in the glory of a truly great achievement :) You are all to be congratulated :) I can only hope I'll do as good a job of fostering my kids education.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm not fussed. There were 108 recipients so I can't expect her to be featured in all the news items. (She was on the Channel 9 news last night :D.) The phone has been ringing off the wall here today!
She is heading for Uni. Sydney, ANU, NSW or Wollongong I think are her preferences but a lot depends on accommodation, scholarships and the like. She's looking at International Studies (whatever that is) and/or Law. The Fees and HECS are enough to kill an ox.

HECS can be deferred so it wont cost you anything. Make her defer them, then when she starts work a small amount comes out each week before tax. I think i pay about 120 or so per fortnight. Matt

Or...pay up front and get the discount :D
I checked the annual fees for a Law course at one of the Uni's and combined with accommodation, assuming it's a four year course (?), came to a mere $132,000.00 so yeah I probably will pay up front ... not!
and for the doubters ....

She had three photo sessions yesterday - quite interesting to watch the professional photographers at work and where they chose to pose the pictures - all totally different.

Excellent and my congratulations! Both my son and daughter went to Penrith High. My son finished about 10 years ago and my daughter about 4 years ago.
For those not from NSW, Penrith is a Selective School - they have to do an exam to get selected. It's a pity the teachers at Penrith aren't also required to meet the same standards as the studnets. Some of theose I met there are a waste of space.
Re HECS, my daughter paid her HECS (a lot less than law!) each year in advance to get the discount.
She worked for a year before starting her BA in Nursing - that also enabled her to get a Youth Allowance from CentreLink. She rang a few minutes ago to say she's passed and can register as an RN.
Speaking of CentreLink - based on my daughter's experience, they must be the worst govt. org. to work with. The dole bludgers really know how to work the system but someone who is willing to work is screwed by CentreLink. If you save some money, you are discriminated against.

Now she can register, she can take the Derby job in February.
Sorry, Dave, we are moving awy from YOUR daughter's achievement.
Umm, can I say she's a good looker? :) I saw her on TV.
Some here have questioned your parentage because of her brains, now we have the good looks throwing up another query! :D

Thanks for the congrats Jamo, NM and Vandermorph et al. :)
NM - thanks for your suggestions but she's done six years of commuting to Penrith, if at all possible I'd like her to be able to live on, or near, campus - otherwise you miss out on 90% of the social life!
Pedro - as to the big question - lets just say I'm hoping the Land Rover obsession will overcome her oneday. (I'm sure a RR Sport would do!)
Only to you, Bianca, only to you. :D
I didn't realise we had met, but judging by that comment we must have.;)
Nice to hear your kids went to Penrith High too Ron and I must admit I've always been puzzled by the idea that you have a school with strict entrance requirements for the students but apparently no entrance requirements for the teachers! However, with only one or two exceptions over the years, I have had been very impressed with the teachers at Penrith. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and rapport with the students has helped to create a positive culture at the school which helps to bring out the best in all the students. I am very grateful that my two were able to obtain a place there. :)
... and congratulations to your daughter on her BA!
