View Full Version : Active Rear Diff

I've just picked up the new D3 and at the time, didn't take up the "active rear differential" option - which I assume is a locking diff. On reading the Manufacturer's Warranty info I see that if I have it retro fitted within 21 days of purchasing the vehicle it will be covered under the new car warranty. If I wait and change my mind later, it will only have a 12 month warranty.
I've never owned or driven a vehicle with locking diffs so my question is this: Should I spend the $1000.00 and get it, or give it a miss?
If anyone has driven vehicles with lockers and can shed some light I would be grateful.
I will be towing a 1.75 tonne camper a lot, through all kinds of terrain.

Get it fitted, its one of those things Youd rather have and not need than need and not have....
and if its covered under full factory warrenty they cant try to pull the
"it wasnt ment for off road use" line to reject warrenty.. WTF would you fit an active diff to a vehicle that already has excelent traction control if you werent going to use it seriously off road.

Buy, buy, buy! $1k is cheap locker full stop. And to be honest the D3 being independent suspension all round might struggle in the nasty stuff without a locker IMHO - but I don't own one either.

I don't know the ins & outs of the D3 acticve rear diff, but I would have thought the $1000 extra would have been for the diff to be fitted on the production line.
I'd imagine it would be a lot dearer to retro fit it.

I didn't think it was able to be retro fitted, although that said I have read about one installed on a coil sprung D3 and changed to activate manually.

LR have always told me (I asked prior to purchasing) that the eDiff is one option that _cannot_ be retro-fitted to the car.
Even if it could, the cost would be prohibitive. The $1000 quoted is for a vehicle off the assembly line. Hence I had to order mine and wait an extra few months for delivery.
There was talk of ARB doing an after-market air locker, but I haven't heard anymore about it. I'd imagine it would be quite a challenging design project.
Cheers,
Gordon

I guess that answers it then! Thanks for all of the replies. I suppose I'll just have to do what I always do...assess every situation on its merits and try not to get in the manure in the first place.

Bugger was starting to get excited that the rear diff could be retro fitted as I was led to believe it couldnt be. The only reason I didnt get the rear at the time of purchase is because I knew bugger all about 4bies or what a diff was in the first place, if I had I would have had it fitted. So far though have not had any probs with the e diff, it has come in very handy combined with the TC ( and occasional comments behind me on UHF, like "you cheat" " thats not fair" "how'd you do that" especially with only HP's on :D )

Yep $1000.00 is a lot of extra money to spend on an already extreme capable off road 4x4 Disco. But that price for a locker is cheap and if you are going to take it off-road you will defiantly use it. The locker just means in some obstacles you can walk the Disco through easier locked where a non locker 4x4 would try and use more momentum to get through putting more load and wear and tear on the forby.

$70,000.00 vehicle.... E Diff is 1.4% of total price
Should really help resale too.....
If you can stretch it, get it :)

Yeeeek! I rang the dealer. The $1000.00 is the price of the option when factory fitted during build. Retro fitting is available, with no change out of $8,000.00. We didn't get the option originally because the car we are buying was already on the ship on its way to Fremantle and we wouldn't have had to wait too long to get it.
Missed out I guess.
Anyway, the dealers opinion is that we really won't need it. "Overkill" was his description.

And for 99.9 percent of Discovery 3 owners they are correct.

True to a point unless you intend to hit hard tracks. If you are just touring you probably wont need it.
Anyway ARB will have one for you in the not to distant future for the same price as $1000.00 and you can get to know the amazing Disco 3 boundary's of 4x4 till then.
The D3 with Terrain Response is a very capable vehicle. ;)
