Hi guys..

the more i drive the discoII.. the more i notice its very eeermm whats the word.. full of character...

i can drive it one day and it sounds like it has an engine full of spanners.. and then another i can hardly hear it (even when i'm hammering it up at 4500rpm)

anyone else have this kind of character in theirs? im not talking about hot and cold running as it always sounds like a bag of spanners when cold! :D

Thanks

Steve

Mine always sounds the same. You might want to get a good Landie mechanic to have a look over it in case somethink nasty is about to happen.

I have often wondered about this.

With mine it used to depend on the time of day. It would always sound awful and lack power when leaving work in the afternoon, and I found that once it was nice and warm, if I stopped and re-booted it would then be much quieter and go like a scalded cat. Weird. (Always did this from new, I asked LR about it and got the standard response that it was a "characteristic", just like the vibration I could never get rid of). I think it depends what sort of mood the ECU is in.

hehe saw a great reg plate today... 247pms made my drive into work a little more fun

yes... a reboot when its warm makes it quieter.. and it always seems to go quite well considering the weight of the car and the relatively low power.. but i never seem to lose power when it sounds rough...

maybe i just need better oil rather than the stuff the stealer puts in.. (i havent had it serviced under my ownership yet... but it will be getting fed quality stuff...)

I have never had any symptons even close to this. As soon as she is warm see goes like a rocket and noise levels are always the same. Hot or cold.

Only think I do is NEVER drive her hard untill the engine is completely warm.

i always limit myself to 2.5k rpm.. until its up to running temp.. anything less and its slow tedious acceleration!

Just wondered how many people did have variable noise... i guess some will.. others wont.. and its all subjective too.. i think half of my variation is from the climate control being on auto.. therefore drowning the engine out sometimes..

Thanks

if i take the time to warm my 300tdi for 4 or 5 minutes it is usually quieter and smoother on that run than if i hop in start and run, most of the time.

i have found that mine will run smooth(er) and quieter for weeks after hauling a very heavy load, i would imagine it has burnt off the glaze in the bore with the big haul.

YES....!!!!

Another Td5 thats "in the zone" or out of it ;)

Its a pecular feeling that when it is in, it just glides over the road with little noise from anything. The motor feels like it is running on all cylinders with little vibration.

When it is out, the motor feels running rough, alot of noise, harshness and moderate vibration...just doesn't want to glide.

This 'feeling' can change from ignition off stop starts, if you get the drift

i wonder if tombraiders mods help sort this out? (and yes mr tombraider i will be sending the ECU to you soon... just had a few things i needed the car for!)

or wonder if its just sensors etc acting up a bit? or our ears and brains!

Thanks

Gee I have never noticed anything like you guys have described, she seems to run smooth all the time.

Maybe because I have a 1 hour highway run at least every two weeks, keeps her running smooth.

My TD5 exhibits some of these characteristics, but they are all consistent and predictable.

At idle - standard, diesel rattle - but smooth and not too loud.
Low RPM - under moderate load - like two dwarfs under the bonnet fighting with rattle-guns. Does get a bit better when warm.
Turbo boost - under any load - smooth and much quieter.
Over-run - high revs - very smooth and quiet.
Over-run - low revs - smooth and becomes rattly when pulling-up.

Generally though, rattles like a box of hammers off-boost not under load.
Silky smooth and quiet on boost under load and on over-run.

Yep, my manual '99 D2 TD5 has/had 2 distinct noises - although one may have been eliminated recently after having all the connections cleaned. Used to sound rough and noisy which would go hand in hand with slight drop in power and jerky drive. Then next day engine would be purring like it should with noise being down (or sounding like it should IMO) and running smooth as. My advice is clean ALL the electrical connections you can get to including the crank angle sensor connection and see how it feels from there.

Mine has been with a friend for a few weeks so will be interesting to see his take on how it has driven in his hands.

Good luck, Mick

without actually seeing it or playing with it Id blame glazing and perhaps a little injector clogging... Heres the fix and its good fun too..(and if it doesnt fix it it eliminates glazing and potentially dirty injectors)

put a little bit of petrol injector cleaner in the tank when its near empty (1/4 of the bottle tops.. add dieso

Go and thrash the thing with that mix in it full noise, full speed, fully loaded, get a 4 ton trailer and give her a workout... got a boost gauge? cool see how long you can keep that past 16psi.

now refill with dieso and see how she goes.

I noticed mine was quiet and had lots of go when going out, but when I was driving back home it was noisy and needed a lot more pedal. Oh, did I mention the stiff tail-wind on the way out?
