Defender wheel carrier DIY

got to work on it over the weekend for the upcoming Alice trip, progress so far.Going to cut down the original mount plate and weld it to a plate attached to the pipe to carry the wheel, getting a mate to lathe up some Teflon bushes for the pivots and use small sections of pipe as sleeves over them.Total cost for all materials was $150, the piece of Teflon rod was $80 itself.All the mounts are cut and shaped with a 4" angle grinder, the only thing I used thats not a home handyman item was the pipe bender(borrowed from work). Should have it finished by the end of the week, will post more pics then.PS something went wrong with the link in the middle.

who taught you to bend pipe!!!

next time weld a plate one one end, pack it full of sand and weld another plate on the other end!
this will stop the pipe from collapsing/kinking like it has;)

nylon? the white stuff?? lubron would have been a better choice, its harder wearing and self lubricating:D

the advice is good but hey thats a bloody good job for a first off attempt

Nice but I reckon it needs a vertical brace on it near the hinges or the weight and vibration is going to play merry hell on that top.hinge.

You might also want to consider pulling the top hinge and making a rubber gasket out of old inner tube, floor mat or soft conveyer rubber dont make the holes for the bolts full size let it grab at them a little then when you put it back together put some aluminium panel washers on the inside (you may need to drill these out or make em custom)

But not a bad job, hows the dynamic movement with the door opening go?

and if you get enthusiastic, if you cut and paste it just before the hinges put a flat plate in there those type of wheel carriers make excelent air tanks.

What's Lubron? And where do you get it?
bearing shops stock it, like CBC etc.
or engineering workshops. its fairly common if you know where to look:D

its amazing what you can do when your bored!

still good that steve's had a go! look at mine! i paid for it (cos i got lazy) fitted it, didnt fit properly, put up with it for awhile, got bored one day and cut it up and made it how it should have been:D

im deffinatly happy with it now! it is a really good design, simple light and for what it is, bloody strong!

the main tube on mine is made from exhaust tube!:o

oh, and it opens with the rear door.

the top mount isnt showing any problems at all and i doubt it ever will. but do watch out in reguards to the bottom mount. on mine ive made up a large spreader plate to spread the load. with the small orignal one it was colapsing my cross member....

were the mounting bolts for your lower mount thru both sides of the crossmember? I have put a spreader plate on the forward facing face of the CM and bolted thru both sides with 4x10mm, do you reckon I should fit crush tubes inside as well? Also fitted a backing plate of 3mm on the top mount, when its finished it will open with the door as well, my main tube is 5mm thick wall, so not to worried about it distorting.:D

yep, they go all the way through. i used 2x 1/2''x4''? HT bolts and 1x 3/8x1'' this one dosent go through.

ide use crush tubes, other wise to have to tighten up the bolts every now and then.

Did you know that the space inside your original carrier mount ( the bit you welded to the pipework) is the right size for one of the long skinny 1.5kg gas bottles and a small compressor?

I work on all other materials, just never learnt to weld!
