Well decided to finally find out what was making the dreaded td5 fender squeal. so after pulling the aircon out of the way the turbo back a little bit and the exhaust manifold completely off i found the problem

Am guessing you blokes have seen this plenty of times, but was just wondering if i should replace the manifold studs while i'm here, they are all in tact funily enough, or should i just be running with that if they aint broke don't fix it? cos i could potentially break em getting them out? also i am going to get the manifold machined and was wondering what i should be looking to pay??

while you have the manifold off check that hose as the heat from the turbo and leaking exhaust gaskets tend to stuff it and yes replace the studs and the nuts as well get the proper nuts as the serrations on the bottom of the nuts stop them coming loose,I used the old nuts on top of the new ones also drill out the holes on the end ports

Ok the hose is ok, have the new nuts and studs but what do you mean by drilling out the holes? and how do i get the studs out? i was thinking with two nuts maybe??? back to back and then just keep twisting or do i need some special lr tool???

Between $40 and $60, your lucky in that the studs didn't break off inside the head as mine did, i'd replace them to be sure.

Don't worry...he will do that when he tries to remove the studs
It's bound to happen......:wasntme:

Also, further improvements to the manifold was to drill out the bolt holes a little. I am not sure which holes or how many but it allows the manifold to move a little without breaking your studs.

I haven't had this problem yet so I am unfamiliar with the whole process.

Cheers.

Breaking Studs is what i'm afraid of. So i reckon since i have all the studs intact i aint gonna change em till they break. will get the manifold holes machined both sides so the nuts pull flat on the studs .

the two nuts are fine just take it easy by unwinding a little then if it gets tight wind it back in then unwind again and repeat if needed also have some wd40 handy also a good set of vice grips instead of the nuts works as well. put some antiseize on the threads

Its a given, that when refitting and re torquing the manifold on 1 or more studs WILL break....

This is not if... or maybe, rather which ones!

Pull the lot, turf them all and fit new ones.... otherwise you'll replace a couple and then one of the old one is going to break later on...

The holes to change are to two end ones one front one back. Enlarge the holes so they are slightly oval. This give the manifold the ability to expand and shrink without warping or breaking the studs. If your manifold is bad it will cost about $90.

Hey, great photos and really helps, I must get my skills up in this to contribute to this forum as I think visual, being blokes as any Handbrake will tell you, is the only way we get the "picture"---hah

G'day TREX :)

I would replace that rubber hose while the manifold is off, it has had the heat on it for ???? how long :( and it would be false economy to not replace it, just bung it in the tool box as a spare, same with the studs & nuts, Heat == Fatigue;) == SNAP:eek: it's not worth the grief.

cheers
