D1 V8, what is the round grommet near the airbox for

I was wondering what the large rubber grommet on the inside of the guard in front of the air cleaner. When pulled out it gives access to the inner guard. Whats it for?

I have seen it used for a roca silva (leach / slug) snorkel here:

I think mantec snorkels use it too.

TDI's draw air from the inner guard and an elbow fits in the hole and goes to the filter box.

Yes they are the same, i just fitted a safari snorkle and on the box it said it fits V8 and TDI from 94' up non abs.
