Thinking about a little project to maybe do sometime in the future - looking at a bitzer awd bush basher for on the farm. Does anyone have any ideas what small cars used a transfer case that provided constant 4wd with a CDL but the transfer case has to be stand alone unit with dual range. That is not attached to the gear box and is driven by a shaft from the gearbox.

The only one I can think of is one out of a Lada Niva. The other is Suzuki but it is not canstant 4wd.

Any suggestions on what transfer cases might be available - I appraciate other configurations may be more practical and I am aware of most of these - this is just one option.

Cheers

Hi Gary
Not permanent 4x4,but very tough.
Nissan 720 transfercase.(hilux style 80s ute)
Beauty of it is its a remote mount,ie not bolted direct to the gearbox so any motor/gearbox can be fitted.Strong as,will handle a turboed V6 or a V8.
Did see an off-road racer once, nissan 300ZX V6 turbo rear mounted running the 720 transfercase back to front to get the drive to the fronts.Went pretty well when they werent having electrical gremlins.
Is there a specific need for permanent 4x4????
PS,you will find the Niva is RangeRover technology they bought the licence for!!!!

Thanks Ladas - I have had a subaru and know all about them - they are a north south configuration but their transfer case is an extension of the gearbox.

Andrew - also know all about the Nissan 720 - my brother used to drive on and it recovered my series 3 a few times and even the disco once. The Suzuki Sierra is a similar system to the 720 only smaller.

Yep - I want permanent 4wd with low range with the abilility to lock the CDL ala landrover and Lada. If it wasn't the case I would use the a suzuki transfer case.

I wonder if the CDL section out of a landy if fitted into a piece of pipe to make a housing go on the front of a 720 transfer case - slaps self around the face :o- get real :D

Other than the lada - anyone got anyother suggestions?

- hence

This should be moved to the Tech Threads.

I didn't post it there cause it is not really landrover and is more hobby biased rather than fixing a dead landy.

Well maybe it is - time to come clean - was sitting here thinking how to do away with the Viscous coupling in my Freelander and replace it with a centre diff and cdl (the landy cdl in a pipe idea) and how to give it low range - noting that I have a spare dead freelander transfer case (IRD) and a spare good diff.

I reackon if I cut the IRD in half leaving the crown and pinion in place to take drive to the rear as it does now and connect the spare diff I have to it and replace the VC with a small transfercase I could have a dual range freelander - as I have most of the bits and and a lada transfer case would be cheap. I have measured the width of the diff - it would fit so no changes to front drive shafts, gearbox, or suspension would be needed. The hardest bit would be to get a small shaft made to take the drive from the diff tthrough the IRD (as it does now) to the passenger side to connect up with the current drive arrangement.

I will be getting a new car in the next year or so and as Paul (Defender 130) will attest Freelanders are getting cheap so it will be worth nothing - so a little project to play around with in my retirement will be nice.

I know some will say why bother - but you have to do something to keep your self occupied - people said the same when I said I wanted to put a Dunny Door Getrag 5 speed behind my v12 jag - well I did it without buying adapter bits etc - they were not available - the system works a treat.

Think, design and draw and with the help of a machine shop and some welding anything is possible. Putting a V12 jag engine in a series 1 landy is also possible - nearly did it once but common sense prevailed - mainly it was the lack of brakes that scared me off - hadn't thought the braking through at the time - if I did it now - no problems - still have the V12 lying around the backyard - hmmm I wonder if it would fit into the freelander - maybe not.

Anyway back to the original thread - any ideas on a better tranfer case than a lada - already checked out a disco - it is just too big.

How about getting a cheap diesel disco with damaged body. Then transplant the freelander body onto the disco chassis and running gear.

A company http://www.northoffroad.co.uk/vehicles.asp in the UK are doing something similar.

What are the full-time 4wd gearboxes? Jeep, Mitsubishi haven't been mentioned yet. What do Mistu run in the Evo's? Or the Pajero Io? No low range, of course. There might be some Jap-market specific bits you could get sent over.
